MOREHEAD, Ky. – The Morehead State softball team will have the upcoming weekend off due to weather and field conditions at the site of this weekend's three-day George Mason Tournament in Fairfax, Va.
The Eagles were slated to play five total games against the host Patriots and Cornell from Friday through Sunday.
GMU posted the following statement on their website announcing the news:
"George Mason softball's home-opening tournament has been cancelled due to field conditions resulting from the recent snowstorm.
"After evaluating the playing surface at the George Mason Softball Complex, it was determined to not be in a safe or playable condition. With additional inclement weather in the forecast, the decision was made to cancel this weekend's scheduled games from Friday, February 13 through Sunday, February 15."
Morehead State coach
Megan Griffith will look to add mid-week games later in the season to offset the cancellations. There are no plans to find a replacement this weekend.
The Eagles dropped their four contests at Presbyterian's Blue Hose Invitational this past Saturday and Sunday in Clinton, S.C.
The team is next scheduled to participate in Memphis' Blues City Invitational from Friday, Feb. 20 to Sunday, Feb. 22. The slate includes matchups with Bradley (2 p.m.) and Indiana State (6 p.m.) on Friday, Northern Illinois (6 p.m.) and Indiana State (8 p.m.) on Saturday, and North Carolina A&T (noon) on Sunday.
The Eagles have one more tournament on the weekend of February 27-March 1, before opening the home and Ohio Valley Conference portion of their season, March 7-8 against defending OVC regular season and tournament champion Eastern Illinois.
