Eagle Women Scrap to End but Fall to Tennessee Tech 61-58

Morehead, Ky. -- Morehead State battled back from a 13-point deficit in the third quarter to get to within one point on two occasions late, but fell to Tennessee Tech 61-58 Thursday night in Johnson Arena.

Morehead State (15-11, 10-5 OVC) was led by Landon Forbes with 18 points. The junior hit five of her seven three-point attempts and six of ten from the floor. Kate Dike and Violet McNece scored 11 apiece. Millie Pearson finished with eight points and posted a new career-high with three blocked shots.
 
Tennessee Tech (14-10, 7-8 OVC) led 29-25 at the half and pushed their lead to 13 at the 8:00 mark of the third quarter. Tech started with a 11-2 to begin the quarter and led 40-27 with 6:27 left in the quarter.

Morehead State was without starting point guard Marie Sepp who injured her ankle Saturday at UT Martin. 

"We saw how much we rely on Marie Sepp," said Morehead State head coach Ashton Feldhaus. "She is a coach on the floor, and tonight we had a tough time getting into our plays. Marie was missed on the floor tonight."
 
Morehead steadily chipped away at the Tech lead and two Forbes three-pointers pulled the Eagles to within 54-52 with 4:08 to go. After TTU extended the lead back to eight, McNece hit a three pointer to trim the lead to 58-56 with 17 seconds remaining. McNece hit a shot inside the paint to pull the Eagles to within one at 59-58 with five seconds left.
 
Tech's Reghan Grimes hit two free throws to seal the win. Grimes posted a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Reagan Hurst led the Golden Eagles led all scorers with 21 points.
 
NOTABLE
  • Morehead State shot 22-58 (38%) from the floor and 8-22 (36%) from three-point range. Tennessee Tech shot 18-48 (38%) and 7-20 (35%) from beyond the arc.
  • Tennessee Tech hit 18 of 20 from the free throw line. MSU hit six of 11 (55%)
  • Morehead State committed 13 turnovers while TTU turned the ball over 20 times. MSU had a 27-10 advantage in points off turnovers. That was the highest total for MSU this season against a Division I opponent.
  • MSU notched a season-high seven blocks.
  • TTU outrebounded MSU 40-29. Tech had 11 offensive boards while Morehead State pulled down nine rebounds off the offensive glass. Tech held a 10-4 edge in second chance points.
