Baseball Bats Go Wild in Game Two While Pitching Shines in Game 1 as Eagles Sweep UMass Lowell Saturday

WINCHESTER, Ky. -- Caden Sheridan hit a go-ahead homer in the seventh inning, while four Morehead State pitchers held UMass Lowell to four hits in game one, and the bats went wild in game two with four home runs and 17 hits as MSU swept a doubleheader from the River Hawks 3-2 and 22-10 at George Rogers Clark High School Saturday.

The sweep allowed the Eagles to take the season opening series 2-1.

Six Eagles had multiple hits in game two and seven produced multiple RBI. A trio of Eagles relievers also held UML off the scoreboard for its final four plate appearances after a nine-run fifth inning. MSU scored three runs each in the first three frames and added a six-spot in the fourth and fifth innings. In game one, starter Kamden Hawks struck out five, while Carter Owens and Devin Costa shut down UML to seal the win. Costa earned his first Eagle save.

The teams traded runs in the third inning in the opener before UML took a 2-1 lead heading to the bottom of the sixth. Nick Griffith's double scored Jaden Correa with the tying run. Sheridan, who also caught three runners stealing from his catcher's spot, led off the seventh by taking Jacob Jette's (0-1) first pitch over the wall down the left field line.

Owens, returning from missing the 2025 season, tossed the sixth and seventh and didn't allow a hit as he was credited with the win. Costa coaxed the final six outs for the save while not allowing a hit either.

Sheridan, Kyle Krupp, Ian McCubbin and Aubrey Kearns all collected two hits as MSU produced 10.

UML scored the second game's first run in the first, but then MSU erupted for the next 15 to pull ahead 15-1 after four. McCubbin clubbed his second three-run homer of the year in the bottom of the first. Kearns nailed his first long ball of the season in the third and added an RBI single in the fourth. Krupp, Correa and pinch hitter Miller Murray all drilled two-RBI doubles in the scoring flurry in the third and fourth innings.

But, the River Hawk fifth frame produced nine runs, including a three-run round-tripper by Carlos Martinez. With the score now 15-10, Austyn Peak set the tone with his first homer of the year to lead off the Eagle fifth. Murray cracked another two-run double down the left field line, and Alex Kean had a two-run single eclipsed the 20-run mark to lead 21-10. Brayton Coomer's first career homer closed the scoring in the sixth.

Cole Wells pitched two frames of scoreless ball, Blake Hager had a clean inning in the eighth, and Luke Hayes closed out with a scoreless frame in the top of the ninth.

Krupp, Murray, Kearns, Coomer, Correa and Griffith all notched two hits apiece. Murray (4), Krupp (3), McCubbin (3) and Correa (3) led the RBI barrage.

MSU continues the season Tuesday at 4 p.m. ET at nearby Kentucky.
