Baseball Travels to Winthrop for a Three-Game Weekend Set

Morehead, Ky. -- Morehead State returns to the diamond Friday for the opener of a three-game series against Winthrop at Founders Field in Rock Hill, S.C. The first pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. ET. Saturday's and Sunday's contests are set for 2:00 p.m. ET starts.
 
Sunday's game can be seen on ESPN+. The Friday and Saturday games will be on Winthrop radio. Those broadcasts are linked on the Winthrop Athletics website. Morehead State is coming off an 8-6 upset of No. 18 Kentucky Tuesday in Lexington. The Eagles pounded out 11 hits in a back-and-forth game that saw six lead changes. MSU third baseman Aubrey Kearns and shortstop Jaden Correa powered the Eagle attack with three hits and a home run apiece.
 
Kearns finished three for five, adding a double while driving in three runs. Freshman center fielder Kyle Krupp got two hits in four at bats. Freshman Luke Hayes (1-0) picked up the win out of the bullpen. Junior Devin Costa earned his second save of the season, getting three outs in the ninth, including two strikeouts.
 
Winthrop lost at NC State Wednesday 7-3. The Eagles got on the board first with a lone run in the second, and the score was tied 3-3 after three innings. NC State scored twice in the sixth and plated two more in the eighth for the final margin.
 
Winthrop right fielder Josh Skowronski rapped out two hits, including a double, in four at bats and scored one of the Eagles' runs.

  • There will be a familiar face for Morehead State fans in the Winthrop dugout: for MSU skipper Mike McGuire is in his second season as the head coach at Winthrop. McGuire was the head coach at Morehead State from 2013-2019. In those seven seasons, he compiled a 228-187 record and led teams that won the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament in 2015 and 2018.
  • Sophomore Aubrey Kearns leads Morehead State, hitting .500. He is the son of former major-leaguer Austin Kearns. In 41 games last season, he made 38 starts, hitting .240 in 154 at bats. He posted six home runs, three doubles and three triples.
  • Junior Ian McCubbin was named the Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week Monday for his performance in the Eagles' season-opening series against UMass Lowell. He went five for 10 at the plate with two home runs and drove in six on the weekend.
  • Freshmen Kyle Krupp and Nick Griffith have been solid in their opening four games as Eagles. Krupp has started all four games in center field and has gotten at least one hit in each game. He has seven hits in 16 at bats for a .438 average.
  • Krupp leads the Eagles with five stolen bases in eight tries. Morehead State is 10-14 in stolen base attempts.  
  • Griffith has posted a .357 average, going five for 14 at the plate.
  • Catcher Caden Sheridan's hit streak was broken at Kentucky Tuesday. However, he reached base three times (two walks and a hit by pitch) and scored twice. He also threw out a base stealer; his fifth of the season.
  • Sheridan was an Ohio Valley Conference All-Freshman Team selection last season. He finished his 2025 campaign with a .265 batting average, five home runs and 32 RBI. He led the team (and ranked tied for sixth in the OVC) with 14 doubles.
  • Sheridan played and started in 52 of the Eagles' 53 games last season. He played five defensive positions (catcher, first base, second base, right field and center field) and was also the designated hitter in seven games last season.
  • Jaden Correa has been solid in the first week of the campaign, posting a .429 batting average (6-14). He smacked his first home run of the season at Kentucky. He enters the series with a 1.081 OPS through the first four games of the season.
  • Landon Waugh got the start in the season opener against UMass Lowell last Friday. He threw five innings giving up an unearned run and just one hit. He walked one batter and struck out seven.
  • Waugh led MSU last season with a 5.27 ERA. He posted no record in his 18 appearances (with two starts) and notched one save. In 41 innings pitched, he allowed 26 runs (24 earned) on 38 hits. He walked 29 and struck out 34. He held opponents to a .242 batting average.
  • Kamden Hawks produced a solid start last Saturday against UMass Lowell. He allowed two runs (one earned) on just two hits. He walked two and struck out five River Hawks.
  • In his freshman season in 2025, Hawks led the Eagles with 57 strikeouts, ranking eighth in the OVC. Opponents hit .245 against him, sixth lowest in the OVC. He was an OVC All-Freshman Team selection.
