MOREHEAD, Ky. -- The Morehead State men's golf team jump started its 2026 campaign in sunny Mexico, finishing 8th at the Compadres Collegiate.
The tournament took place in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico, over the par-72, 6,701 yard Playa Paraiso Golf Club Course. Nine teams competed, and the tournament concluded with a first place finish for the host team, The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.
"This will be the toughest test we see all spring," said Head Coach
Matthew Martin. "The course exposed a lot of our weaknesses at the moment. But we will keep working hard and are certainly in a better place now than when we arrived."
The Eagles got off to a slow start. Sophomore
Gavin Augenstein led the Eagles after round one, shooting two over par for a score of 74. Junior
Remy Stalcup had a strong performance on the front nine, shooting four birdies on holes 4-7.
Day two was a similar story. The wind was troubling, causing a lot of difficulties around the course. The Eagles tallied 12 birdies but ultimately remained in similar position. The final round is when the Eagles had their best day.
Sophomore Seamus Bogan took a remarkable leap in the final day. Bogan was the highest riser in the tournament, catapulting 15 spots to finish top-10. Bogan shot four under, finishing with a score of 68. Bogan birdied or shot even on 16 out of the final 18 holes he played.
Senior Logan McCormick had a solid day, moving 13 spots after shooting even. McCormick birdied or shot even on 14 out of his final 18 holes. Senior Logan Liles had his best performance of the tournament as well, sinking four birdies. Freshman Evan Taylor played as an individual and finished 55th.
Bogan led the team overall, finishing tied for 10th with a +6 and scores of 76-78-68--222. Augenstein carded a 74-79-78--231, and McCormick added 81-81-72--234. Stalcup turned in a score of 82-79-79--240 with Liles (88-85-77--250) and Taylor (86-87-90--263) also competing.
The Eagles are back in action in the Savannah Intercollegiate in Savannah, Ga., on Feb. 21-22.
