Many Eagles Shine in First Tournament, Chaney-Denham-Landrum Shootout

MOREHEAD, Ky. – The Morehead State men's golf team opened its season on Monday, August 31, competing in the Chaney-Denham-Landrum Shootout. Morehead State finished third in official scoring, while the Eagles' undeclared "B Team" - made up of individuals - finished with the lowest score among all competing teams.

"Anytime we can honor Coach (Rex) Chaney it is a good day," said Head Coach Matthew Martin. "Along with Coach (Ernie Denham and Coach (Daryl) Landrum; all three were trailblazers for golf in the state of Kentucky. We are better positioned for the rest of the season now.  It was really good to see all 12 guys out there competing.  We will keep working to build on the positives and correct the mistakes."

The tournament took place in Florence, Ind., over the par-71, 6,925-yard Belterra Golf Club Course. Morehead State posted a final score of 292-284—576 (+8). The Eagles finished one stroke behind Northern Kentucky, while Bellarmine won the tournament, finishing just one over par.

MSU's final score of 576 (+8) is the fourth-best finish in a two-round tournament in the past 15 years. 

Round one was led by senior Remy Stalcup. Stalcup turned in a 69 (-2), sinking seven birdies. Junior Seamus Bogan and sophomore Sebastian Pell (Ind.) finished two strokes behind Stalcup, posting a 71 (E).

Round two was when MSU really shined, with seven Eagles finishing at or under par. Junior Gavin Augenstein (Individual) and freshman Clay Noble (Ind.) both finished three under par, posting a 68. Augenstein and Noble turned in nearly identical cards in the second round, each sinking five birdies and an eagle on the 18th hole. Sophomore Evan Taylor (Ind.) and Bogan were one stroke behind, posting a 69 (-2). Sophomore Wynn Flynt (Ind.) finished one under par with a 70, while junior Mitchell Gastright and redshirt-freshman Jace Patrick shot even par, turning in a 71.

Bogan (71-69--140), Augenstein (72-68--140), and Noble (72-68--140) all finished tied for second, scoring two under par for the tournament. Stalcup (69-73--142) finished even and tied for 6th. Taylor (74-69--143) and Pell (71-73--144) also finished in the top-10. Flynt (75-70--145), Patrick (77-71--148), and Gastright (78-71--149) followed closely behind. Junior's Braydon Bond (76-76--151) and Brycen Farris (75-77--152) and freshman Clifton Scully (76-86--162) also competed. 

The Eagles are back in action at the Joe Feaganes Invitational in Huntington, W.Va., on Sept. 14-15.
