Eagle Baseball Swings into OVC Play with Home Series Against SIUE

Morehead, Ky. -- Morehead State Baseball jumps into Ohio Valley Conference play in its true home opener Friday when the Eagles host SIUE at Allen Field at Prefontaine Park in the first game of a three-game series. First pitch Friday is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. ET. Saturday's game is scheduled to start at 2:00 p.m. ET. Sunday's game is set for 1:00 p.m. ET. Each game is scheduled to be aired on ESPN+.
 
Morehead State gets back to action after a road swing into the western Carolina mountains last week. The Eagles kicked off the week prevailing in a 16-11 slugfest at UNC Asheville. Morehead State continued its swing over to Cullowhee to take on Western Carolina in a four-game set. MSU took the series opener 16-11 and fell in the next three games. The Eagles lost a close 8-7 game in the series finale on Sunday.
 
SIUE, the OVC preseason favorite in balloting by conference coaches and media directors, lost a tight 6-5 game at Illinois State Wednesday in Normal, Ill. The Cougars spotted ISU three runs in the bottom of the first, then thundered back with four in the top of the second inning to take the lead. Illinois State got two runs (one earned) in the fourth to retake the lead. Both teams got solo runs in the sixth for the final margin.

Morehead State is 32-18 all-time against SIUE. The schools first met on for a three-game series May 9-10 in Morehead, with the Cougars coming away with a series sweep at Allen Field. The Eagles
returned the favor in 2010, the first year SIUE was a member of the Ohio Valley Conference, seeping the Cougars at Allen Field.  
 
Morehead State is 6-4 in the last ten matchups between the two programs. Last season, the Cougars swept the three-game series in Edwardsville.

  • Projected Friday starter Landon Waugh has struck out 21 batters this season, ranking ninth in the OVC. He has plunked eight batters; that's the second-most in the OVC.
  • Senior Josh Furtado has made six appearances on the mound this season, posting an 11.74 strikeouts per nine innings average. He also has a 2.00 strikeouts to walk ratio.
  •  Reliever Devin Costa has a 4.00 strikeouts to walk ratio and averages 5.54 strikeouts per nine innings.
  • Projected Sunday starter Connor Davis got his second win of the season two weekends ago against Butler. He pitched five innings, scattering five hits allowing three runs and struck out three Bulldog batters.
  • Davis got off to a rocky start last Sunday at Western Carolina giving up three runs to the Catamounts in the bottom of the first inning. The freshman from Cincinnati buckled down and allowed one run on four hits for the next five innings, giving MSU a chance at a comeback win.
  • Freshman Luke Hayes has impressed early in his collegiate career, posting a 2-1 record with a save. He's walked eight batters and struck out 15 while posting a 0.78 WHIP. Opponents are hitting .135 against him.
