Eagle Bats Stymied as MSU Falls 7-2 at Eastern Illinois

Morehead, Ky. -- Morehead State Baseball's bats were held in check most of the game and the Eagles fell to Eastern Illinois 7-2 Saturday at Frost Field in Coaches Stadium in Charleston, Illinois.

Eastern Illinois (15-9, 5-0 OVC) got an outstanding outing from its starting pitcher Bryce Riggs, who took a no-hitter into the ninth inning. MSU shortstop Jaden Correa led off the ninth with a liner to left for the first hit of the game for the Eagles. Kyle Krupp followed with a base hit on a swinging bunt up the third base line.

Eagle center fielder Davis Germann followed with a walk to load the bases and chase Riggs from the game. Right fielder Ian McCubbin spoiled the shutout with a two-out, two run single in the gap in right center. Riggs' line was 8.1 innings pitched, two runs on two hits. He walked one batter and struck out eight.

Morehead State (11-16, 0-5 OVC) got a promising beginning from freshman starter Luke Hays, who made his first collegiate start. Hays got one out in the fourth inning before leaving the game with an apparent injury. He allowed one hit, walked five EIU batters, hit two others and recorded two strikeouts. He was relieved by Landon Waugh (0-5). Waugh worked out of a jam in the fourth.

Eastern Illinois opened the scoring in the fifth inning. EIU's Brett Stanley reached on a hit by pitch. After a strikeout, Panther DH James love walked. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch by Waugh. Eagle shortstop Jaden Correa cut down Stanley at the plate on a ground ball. Love scored on EIU center fielder Joey Hagen's RBI single to right.

The Panthers broke it open in the sixth inning with help from the Morehead State defense which committed two errors in the frame. EIU scored six runs on five hits. All six runs were unearned.

The Eagles and the Panthers wrap up the series Sunday at Frost Field at Coaches Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 2:05 p.m. ET. The game can be watched on ESPN+.
