Eagles Rally but Fall 18-13 to Lindenwood Sunday in a Wild Finish

Morehead, Ky. -- The Morehead State baseball team battled and pounded out 17 hits but fell to Lindenwood in a wild one 18-13 Sunday at Allen Field in Prefontaine Park.
 
The two teams combined for 16 runs in the final three innings.
 
Morehead State (18-21, 5-10 OVC), trailing 9-6, gave up four runs in the top of the seventh inning and responded with five in the bottom of the inning. Davis Germann led off with an infield single to third. Aubrey Kearns lined a single to right. Ian McCubbin singled, scoring Germann and advancing Kearns to second.
 
Griffin Olson reached on a fielder's choice on pop to center that fell, but McCubbin was forced out at second as Kearns advanced to third. Caden Sheridan reached on a fielder's choice to short, scoring Kearns. Nick Griffith cleared the bases with a three-RBI home run over the screen in deep left center trim the LU lead to 13-11.
 
Both team posted two runs apiece in the eighth. Both of Lindenwood's runs were unearned as MSU committed three errors in the inning. The MSU offense again responded; Kearns hit a two-out blast over the screen in right field. McCubbin and Olson both singled the center. Sheridan walked and Griffith walked to force in the second run of the inning and the Eagles trailed 15-13.
 
Lindenwood scored three more in the top of the ninth with a leadoff single, a one-out walk, a double, a run-scoring wild pitch and a two-out single for the final margin.
 
The Eagles gave up four runs in the top of the first inning and rebounded with four of its own in the bottom of the opening frame. Kyle Krupp led off with a walk. Davis Germann reached on an infield single. Aubrey Kearns delivered a single into the right-center field gap, scoring Krupp and putting runners at the bases.
 
Ian McCubbin was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Griffin Olson cleared the bases with a three-RBI single down the right field line to tie the game at 4-4.
 
The Eagles took the lead when McCubbin smashed a 415-foot home run to deep left center, his ninth clout of the season.
 
Lindenwood (21-18, 8-7 OVC) retook the lead with a leadoff home run that just leaked over the screen in right-center. After a walk and a double to put runners at second and third, MSU reliever Cole Wells was called for a balk to score a run. A double plated the other runner and a single plated the third run of the inning to give the Lions a 7-5 lead.
 
Lindenwood got a solo run in the fifth with a one-out double and a two-out single. The Lions stretched the lead with a two-out home run in the sixth to lead 9-5.
 
Morehead State matched the run in the bottom of the sixth when Caden Sheridan led off with a double down the left field line and scored on Alex Kean's RBI single into center field, to trim the Lindenwood lead to 9-6.
 
Lindenwood's Aaron Jungers (4-0) got the win out of the bullpen. He threw 5.1 innings, allowing six runs on nine hits and notched three strikeouts. Ethan Smith (2) earned the save getting the final out in the eighth and striking out the side in the ninth.
 
Morehead State starter Connor Davis (3-1) got the loss, throwing three-plus innings. He allowed six runs on five hits and three walks. He struck out two Lion batters.
 
Morehead State will get back to action Wednesday when the Eagles travel to Huntington, W.Va., to take on Marshall. First pitch at Jack Cook Stadium is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. ET. The game is scheduled to be aired on ESPN+.
 
NOTABLE
  • Kearns finished 3-5 at the plate with a home run and two runs batted. It was his 12th multiple-RBI game and 21st multiple-hit game of the season.
  • Ian McCubbin was 3-4 with a home run and two RBI and scored three times. He stretched his reached-base streak to 20 games, tying for the longest such streak of the season with Alex Kean.
  • Davis Germann was 3-6 with three runs scored.
  • Caden Sheridan finished 2-4 with a double and three runs batted in.
  • Griffin Olson was 2-5 with three runs batted in.
  • Alex Kean finished 2-4 with an RBI.
