MOREHEAD, Ky. -- Morehead State Beach Volleyball advanced in the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament on Thursday with a 3-0 shutout of Eastern Illinois before the Eagles valiantly scrapped for every point but fell to No. 1 Chattanooga 3-1.
MSU, the No. 4 seed, is now 9-18 overall and moves on to face No. 6 Tennessee Tech on Friday at 11 a.m. ET at UT Martin beach courts. The winner of that dual moves on but the loser will see their season come to a halt.
In the opener against the Panthers, No. 5 duo of OVC Freshman of the Year
Haylee DePonte and
Sydney Sennett got the Eagles' scoring started with a 21-12, 21-14 victory. At No. 4,
Logan Smith and
Amelia Nott pushed the advantage to 2-0 as they rallied from a set behind to win 16-21, 21-12, 15-12.
The match clincher came at No. 3 as
Landyn Snowden and
Hollan Everett prevailed 21-17 in both sets. At No. 2,
Sarah Heath and
Shea Hefner were literally in the process of scoring the dual's final point on a kill to win 21-18 in the second set, but the horn blew the match unfinished. The No. 1 match with
M.E. Hargan and
Bella Marita also went unfinished with the Eagle pair leading after one set.
MSU claimed only the fourth point against Chattanooga in the Mocs' competitions against league foes this season when Nott and Smith won 21-15, 21-18 at No. 4. But, the Mocs claimed straight-set wins at Nos. 2,3 and 5 to secure the 3-1 decision. At No. 1, Marita and Hargan split frames with the OVC Pair of the Year, winning the first 23-21, before it was shut down unfinished in the second stanza.
