MOREHEAD, Ky. – Morehead State soccer aims for a bounce back win in its home opener, Sunday, when the Eagles take on the Bearcats of Brescia (Ky.). Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. ET. at the MSU Soccer Field and will also be streamed live on ESPN+.
Morehead State Head Coach
Paul Cox mentioned his expectations for Sunday's match.
"We are looking to rebound and build on Thursday night's second half against Brescia who are coming off their best-ever season," said Cox. "We've set our targets for the game and fully expected to reach them."
MSU has never officially faced Brescia, but the two programs did contest an exhibition contest prior to the 2025 regular season, with the Eagles winning 2-0. In that game, MSU out-shot the Bearcats 28-2 and had seven corner kicks to BU's one.
Faith Peper and
Carly Gilbert scored the Eagle goals.
Morehead State is coming off of a 3-1 loss in Huntington W.Va., where the Eagles faced rival Marshall.
The first half of Thursday's contest was full of offense, showing four goals combined between the two teams.
Marshall knocked in two goals, both within the first 36 minutes.
The Eagles responded quickly thanks to a beautiful setup ball on sophomore
Charlotte Lee's corner kick that led senior
Hannah Carter directly in front of the goal for a header from about six yards out to draw back within one.
Carter's goal was the first goal of her collegiate career and helped put the Eagles right back in the game.
Brescia will be facing Morehead State in its first official contest of the season, as this game will count as an exhibition for the Bearcats, per NAIA vs. NCAA rules. The Bearcats played Marian (Ind.) in an exhibition match Friday. Brescia is coming off an incredible season, going 11-6-1 and losing on penalty kicks in its conference tournament match to WVU Tech.
BU returns 24 players off last year's team, including 10 starters, and welcomes 20 newcomers. Leading scorers senior midfielder Allana Colen Porto (14 goals, eight assists, 36 points, 60 shots) and sophomore midfielder Anna Victorica (11 goals, eight assists, 30 points, 68 shots) are both back, as is junior goalkeeper Laura Thompson, who had a 1.45 goals-against average and 4.82 saves per game last fall.
The Bearcats are coached by Andy Hines, who will begin his third season.
Sunday's match will be New Student Day. Fans and students can come celebrate Move-In Weekend with a fun-filled game day experience.
