Eagles Held In Check Defensively, Fall 2-1 in Oxford

MOREHEAD, Ky. – Morehead State sophomore Charlotte Lee cashed in on a first-half free kick, but the Morehead State Soccer squad ultimately fell 2-1 to Miami (Ohio) Thursday night at Bobby Kramig Field in Oxford, Ohio.

Morehead State Head Coach Paul Cox had a positive outlook on tonight's loss.

"We had the lead. It's preventable things that have cost us, but very fixable, which is encouraging", he said. "The heart and the desire from the group is what I love, I love it. It's another building block for OVC play."

The Eagles (1-2) were held in check, registering only four total shots throughout the 90-minute contest.

The lone Morehead State goal came in the 29th minute, following a foul on Miami defender Jaden Sink. Lee lined up a free kick from about 23 yards out, nailing it into the top left of the goal, putting the Eagles on the board 1-0. This marks the first goal of Lee's career, and her fourth point recorded on the season.

Lee talked about her excitement following her first goal.

"A few of us had been practicing free kicks after training, so when we won one in a great position during the game, I felt confident enough to take the shot. Luckily, I managed to get it up and over the wall and into the net", she said. "I don't score too often, so when it went in, I wasn't really sure what to do, but I think the excitement just took over especially because it was the first goal of the game.
It felt amazing to score my first career goal, especially as it was something I had been hoping to achieve for a while. In recent games, I felt like I had been getting closer, so for it to finally happen was a great feeling."

The last Morehead State Eagle to collect points in three straight matches was Hedda Ornberg from October 20-November 3 in 2024.

Miami responded quickly, evening the score at 1-1 with a goal from junior forward Millie Cook in the 32nd minute. Cook's goal was assisted by senior Katie O'Malley. The Eagles and RedHawks continued their defensive battle, with the score remaining tied heading into halftime.

Miami continued to push the attack, breaking the tie 18 minutes and 52 seconds into the second half (63:52) on a goal by senior Maris Jennings, assisted by Cook.

MSU attempted to draw even but ultimately managed just one shot in the second half.

The RedHawks launched 15 shots compared to Morehead State's four. Sophomore goalkeeper Allie Lammers collected three more saves on the season, stopping three of the five total shots on goal.

Miami handled the possession, controlling the ball for just under 60 percent of the match and keeping it on MSU's defensive side for 69 percent of the time. The RedHawks also led favorably in corner kicks, 8-1.

Morehead State held opposing teams to 170 minutes and 57 seconds in the last two matches, before conceding the first goal of today's match.

The Eagles will be back in action on Sunday when they take on the Vikings of Cleveland State, at MSU Soccer Field. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. ET.
