MOREHEAD, Ky. – Morehead State is back on the road for the first time in three weeks to face Alabama A&M in Huntsville, Ala., on Thursday at 2:00 P.M. ET.
Morehead State enters Thursday's contest with a 4-5 record following its four-game home stint. The Eagles started the home stand on the right foot, defeating Northern Kentucky and Mercyhurst, but fell to Chattanooga and Indiana State in recent matches.
MSU and Alabama A&M have never met. In fact, it is the Eagles' first game against a Southwestern Athletic Conference or an Historically Black College and University (not including the Aug. 5 exhibition with Chicago State).
"We've enjoyed some time off to get rested and ready to get going again in a tough test on the road after a four-game home stretch," said Head Coach Paul Cox. "We look to bounce back after last weeks disappointing result. The energy and the vibe in the camp is very good and we can't wait to play."
The Eagles are coming off a 2-1 loss to Indiana State on Sept. 10 at MSU Soccer Field.
MSU played in consistent rainfall for much of the game, including a steady downpour for the first 20 minutes.
The Eagles jumped out to a quick start. In just the fourth minute of the game, Indiana State was called for a handball in the box, which led to a penalty kick from the Eagles. Gaia Fubelli took the penalty kick, sneaking it past the Sycamore goalie Sofie Hansen to give the Eagles an early 1-0 lead and score the first goal of her collegiate career.
Indiana State's extremely physical play style helped the Sycamores on the offensive side, scoring once in the 27th minute and again in the 58th minute to sink the Eagles 2-1 in the rain.
Despite the score, the competition was evenly matched throughout, with Indiana State holding a slight 52-48% advantage in possession. Both teams finished with 17 shots, while the Sycamores held a 9-8 edge in shots on goal. Both goalkeepers also recorded seven saves, while Indiana State held a 7-5 advantage in corner kicks.
Under Head Coach Prince Borde, Alabama A&M enters Thursday's contest with a 1-3-2 mark, following a 1-1 draw against East Texas A&M on Sept. 10.
The Bulldogs are averaging 0.83 goals per game while allowing 3.00 goals per game. Morehead State is averaging 1.33 goals per game while allowing 1.22.
Despite never playing Alabama A&M, MSU has played five Alabama schools in its history: Alabama (0-1-0), Jacksonville State (10-6-2), Samford (0-5-0), South Alabama (1-0-1) and Troy (1-0-0). The Eagles have a 7-8-2 record (including neutral site contests) in games played in Alabama.
Alabama A&M is one of two regular-season opponents this year that the Eagles are meeting for the first time. The other was Brescia (Ky.).
NOTABLE:
- Natalie Lentine was named OVC Offensive Player of the Week following her first career goal (against Mercyhurst) and first career assist (against Chattanooga) on September 8th.
- Jade Walton has put nine of her 13 shots on goal while scoring on three of those nine attempts, showcasing an impressive level of efficiency. She has scored on 23 percent of her total shots and 33 percent of her shots on goal.
- The Eagles have scored in every game but one this year. The last time Morehead State scored in 8 of the first 9 games was in 2015, when the Eagles scored in 10 of the first 11 games.
- Burke's notched her ninth career assist as an Eagle on Sept. 3, against Merchyhurst, putting her in sole possession of ninth place in program history.
- Charlotte Lee leads the Eagles and is second in the OVC in assists (3).
- Walton is second in the OVC for shots on goal (8).
- The Eagles have scored 12 goals this season from nine different goal scorers.
- Eight of the Eagles nine who have score this season have scored their first collegiate goal.
- Lee's seven points in the first six games of the season was the first time a Morehead State Eagle has accomplished that feat since Ashley Ritchie in the first six games, 10 years ago in 2016.
- MSU has already won as many games at home this year than it did last year and one shy of how many it had combined in 2024 and 2025.
- Lammers' 18 combined saves against Eastern and Northern Kentucky are the most saves in a two-game span since Kayla Landman recorded 21 (14 and 7) against Purdue Fort Wayne and Murray State on 9/29/2019 and 10/4/2019.
- MSU scored in each of its first four games of the season, the first time it has accomplished the feat since 2015.
- Lee recorded four points through the first three games, becoming the first Eagle to do so since Hedda Ornberg did it from October 20-November 3 in 2024.
- MSU tallied 41 shots against Brescia (Ky.) on Aug. 16, tying the school record for most shots in a single game. The Eagles previously recorded 41 shots against rival Austin Peay in October 2002.
- The Eagles held Brescia (Ky.) without a shot in their 2-0 victory on Aug. 16, marking the first time MSU has held an opponent without a shot for an entire game since defeating North Alabama, 2-0, in the 2021 season/home opener.
