Volleyball Falls To League-Leading JSU Gamecocks but Secures Third Seed for OVC Tournament

MOREHEAD, Ky.--The Morehead State volleyball team lost to Jacksonville State, the OVC leader, 3-1 (25-21, 19-25, 25-21, 25-14) Saturday afternoon at Wetherby Gym. Despite the setback, the Eagles still learned they will be the number three seed for the upcoming OVC Tournament in Jacksonville, Ala., this coming week. Murray State lost today, giving the Eagles a half-game edge in the standings.

MSU, which finished the regular season 19-10 and 11-6 in the league, will play its first tournament match Thursday against either Eastern Kentucky or Southeast Missouri. 

Freshman Annie Gruenschlaeger broke the MSU record for block assists in a season during the match. Gruenschlaeger, who tallied seven blocks on Saturday, broke the previous record 122 and now has 127 for the season. The Eagles had nine team blocks, including six by junior Holly Evans. However, JSU was just as stout at the net, sending back 13.5 MSU attacks.

The Gamecocks also (24-6 overall, 17-1 OVC) had three players tally double-digit kills, led by Caitlin Vorbeck with 14, who also had seven blocks. Kara Slater had 10 kills, and Brooke Schumacher also amassed seven blocks. Lauren Harkins had 17 of JSU's 43 digs.

Emma Keough and Gruenschlaeger had 12 and 11 kills respectively fo the Eagles. Kristina Schoo, playing her  final home match, tallied a match best 20 digs. Morehead State opened the match hitting better than .400 in the first two sets but quieted off in the final two committing 16 errors. JSU also opened strong with a .379 hitting effort in the first set. They also cooled down but finished strong with 12 kills and zero errors in the fourth set.

In an evenly matched contest, both teams concluded with 50 kills. MSU had 47 assists to JSU's 46, and the Eagles held a slight edge on back row defense, 51-43.
