Men's Hoops Hosts Tennessee State

MOREHEAD, Ky. -- The lights shone brightly at Johnson Arena as the host Eagles picked up a crucial Ohio Valley Conference win Saturday on national television in overtime against Austin Peay. Morehead State will try to make it four straight wins Monday night with a date against Tennessee State. Also a television game, this one on regional Wazoo Sports Television, it will tip off at 7:30 p.m.

Morehead State got solid production Saturday against the Governors out of several players, including sophomore Terrance Hill, who came off the bench to lead the Eagles with 13 points. Junior Demonte Harper scored in his usual double digits, tallying 12 and junior Kenneth Faried had a 12-point, 19-rebound double-double. The 19 rebounds were a season high. He earned OVC Co-Player of the Week honors for his efforts.

The Eagles are shooting 43 percent from the field and averaging 37.7 rebounds per game. The latter is an important stat because MSU is 5-1 when pulling down 40 or more rebounds this season. Faried leads the Eagles with 16.2 points and 12.7 rebounds per game, Harper averages an even 13 points and Stallworth tallies 10.9 per game.

The Tigers are struggling at 3-11 overall and 0-3 in OVC play. Led by newcomer Josh Sain’s 14.7 points per game and Robert Covington’s 5.6 rebounds, TSU doesn’t have overwhelming stat numbers, but they are an athletic team that can be hard to beat. Covington averages just shy of double digits at 9.9 points per game and Wil Peters averages 9.8. The Tigers have lost 11 games, but only twice, and both early in the season, have they been blown out. Eastern Illinois needed triple overtime to get past TSU and their other two OVC losses were eight-point affairs.

Morehead State goes back on the road for a Thursday game at Tennessee Tech before swinging down to Alabama to face Jacksonville State Saturday.
