JACKSONVILLE, Ala. - The Morehead State women's basketball team will be looking to stay in first place in the Ohio Valley Conference and start 6-0 in league play for the first time in school history Saturday afternoon when the Eagles battle the host Jacksonville State Gamecocks at 3 p.m. EDT at Pete Mathews Coliseum.
A win Saturday would also set a school record for the longest road winning streak at six. The 1979-80 team put together a five-gane road streak, and that's where the Eagles sit right nowe after their 71-63 win at Tennessee Tech Thursday. That win pushed MSU's OVC record to 5-0 where it is tied with rival Eastern Kentucky with perfect league records so far. EKU plays at Tech Saturday.
The Eagles won Thursday's game on the strength of a 21-point, seven rebound effort from senior
Tiffany Hamilton, 17 points from point guard
Courtney Lumpkin, and 15 points plus a career high eight rebounds from senior
Tiffanie Stephens. MSU also was able to rally and win despite leading scorer
Chynna Bozeman being held in check with three points. Bozeman still tops the OVC in scoring at 17.8 per game.
Hamilton has hit 11 of her last 17 three pointers, and as a team the Eagles canned 13 treys Thursday night in Cookeville, Tenn. MSU ranks second in the nation in three pointers attempted and made per game.
Jacksonville State enters the game at 3-11 overall and 0-4 in the conference. The Gamecocks have struggled to fin consistent offense this year. Brittany Wiley scores 8.4 per game, while Karisma Bokin provides 7.9. JSU shoots only 36 percent overall and 28 percent from the three-point line. The Eagles should be able to use their trademark up-tempo long range offense well as JSU allows its opponents to hit 43 percent from three-point land.
The series with the Gamecocks sits at a 7-6 Eagle advantage. MSU has won four of the last five including a come-from-behind 87-77 overtime victory in Jacksonville last year. MSU trailed by 20 with eight minutes left before making a furious rally and sending the game into overtime. MSU is 3-3 all time in Pete Mathews Coliseum.
