CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo.--Redemption will be on the minds of both teams Saturday night when Morehead State men’s basketball visits Southeast Missouri.
The Eagles (17-8; 11-3 OVC) will be looking to bounce back from a heartbreaking one-point loss at Eastern Illinois Thursday. SEMO (7-18; 3-11 OVC), who lost 80-40 at MSU, will be looking to beat the Eagles in return Saturday at the Show Me Center at 8:45 pm. Morehead State still needs just one more win to clinch at least fourth place for the OVC Tournament and the coveted home game. Despite Thursday’s loss, MSU has still won 13 of the last 15 and is holding on to second place in the OVC race. Saturday's game with be Morehead's final regular season OVC road game.
Kenneth Faried, the reigning OVC Player of the Week, led the Morehead State effort at Eastern Illinois with 19 points and seven rebounds, but
Maze Stallworth was almost the hero. Stallworth drilled six 3-pointers, including the potential game-winner with 10 seconds remaining. EIU had other plans however, hitting two free throws with one second remaining to earn the win.
Demonte Harper added 15 points, 10 in the second half and
Brandon Shingles added to his league-leading assists total with seven.
SEMO has been struggling since playing at Johnson Arena in January, having lost seven of nine games. Eight of those games were conference games, but the Redhawks can still be a dangerous team. After falling far behind Thursday against Eastern Kentucky, SEMO came storming back, only to lose by just three.
Anthony Allison, SEMO’s only player averaging double-figure scoring, leads the Redhawks with 10.8 points per game, although Sam Pearson nearly averages double figures at 9.8 points per game. LaMont Russell is their leading rebounder with 7.0 boards per game. SEMO is scoring 7.5 points less per game than its opponents, and is giving up two rebounds and one turnover per game.
After Saturday, the Eagles return home for a rivalry game against Eastern Kentucky Wednesday at Johnson Arena before taking a step out of OVC play for next Saturday’s Bracketbuster game against Illinois State.
