MSU Alum Shimer Leads US Bobsled Team To Gold

VANCOUVER, B.C.--Morehead State University alumnus Brian Shimer, coach of the United State Bobsled Team USA-1, led the four-man team to a gold medal victory. It was the first gold medal for the U.S. since 1948, ending a 62-year drought.

With Justin Olsen, Steve Mesler and Curt Tomasevicz pushing, driver Steven Holcomb posted a four-run time of 3 minutes, 24.46 seconds.

Shimer, a Florida native that was former running back and wide receiver on the football team. After completing his degree in 1985, he was recruited by the U.S. Bobsled Federation because of his athleticism and thus began a 25-year long association with the sport.

As an athlete, Shimer competed in five Olympics and received a bronze medal at the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City in 2002. As a coach, he is a World Cup and a World Championship medalist. Shimer has been men’s head coach of the U.S. Bobsled and Skeleton Federation since 2006.
