GREENVILLE, N.C. -
Morehead State's softball team dropped a 6-3 decision to East Carolina on Saturday in the Pirate Classic, but head coach Holly Bruder wasn't overly disappointed.

The Eagles drop to 1-6 this year.

"I think this may be a new start for us," said Bruder. "We actually got some quality hits today and performed very well. Our pitching continues to be solid."

Junior Rebecca Butler highlighted a seven-hit day for MSU with her first home run of the year. Freshman Amber Riddle also connected on two hots for the day.

Senior pitcher Alex Gjevre was tagged with the loss to fall to 0-4. She allowed five runs on five hits in the first three innings. Senior Sarah Funston tossed four innings and only allowed two hits to go along with four strikeouts.

East Carolina scored once in the first inning and twice in innings two and three while the Eagles generated two runs in the second inning before adding their third in the seventh inning.

Butler led off the second with a round-tripper to center field. Later in the inning, Anna Sommer picked up an RBI via a sacrifice fly to score freshman Taylor Sherritt. Kayla Ashbrook collected an RBI single in the seventh inning to score sophomore Sam Sparks.

The Eagles wrap up the tournament with a 9 a.m. game versus Penn State on Sunday.
