GAME NOTES
MOREHEAD, Ky. - Morehead State men’s basketball is looking to start a new winning streak Thursday night when the Eagles host Jacksonville State at 7:30 p.m. in Johnson Arena. The game is sponsored by Free Enterprise, the official bus provider of Eagle Athletics.
The previous streak of 11 games, one shy of equalling the school record, was stopped by Austin Peay Sunday in a one-point loss in Clarksville.
Junior
Kenneth Faried had his sixteenth double-double of the season and continues to lead the Eagles in scoring at 17.0 points per game and rebounding at 13.7 boards per game. Originally in a four-way battle for rebounding supremacy, Faried has begun to pull away from the pack and is leading the nation by nearly one whole rebound per game.
Demonte Harper and
Maze Stallworth, both of whom tallied double digit scoring against the Govs, are averaging 11.9 and 11.6 points respectively.
Jacksonville State has won four of its last five games, the only setback coming at the hands of Austin Peay. The Gamecocks are working towards sliding into fourth place in the OVC standings to secure one of the coveted first round home games for the OVC Tournament.
JSU is led by transfer Trenton Marshall, the only OVC player averaging more points than Faried. Marshall tallies 18.6 points per game. Nick Murphy adds 13.6 points and a team high 6.6 rebounds per game and Jeremy Murphy tallies 10.6 points per game.
MSU snapped a four-game losing streak at Jacksonville State with a 78-71 win in the teams’ first meeting earlier this season. The Eagles led the entire second half, but JSU kept it close until Morehead State sunk its free throws in the final minute. Faried had a team-high 16 points and 13 rebounds. Harper was held scoreless in the first half but had 13 second half points. Stallworth scored 15 and Steve Peterson put in 12 points.
The Eagles stay at home for the second game of the season versus Tennessee Tech. Tip-off for the Wazoo Broadcast game will be at 8:07 p.m.
