MOREHEAD, Ky. – Morehead State used an eight run seventh inning to take control of a tight game Friday night and went on to a 11-6 victory over incoming Ohio Valley Conference member SIU Edwardsville.
Drew Lee drove in five runs and
Michael Bottoms pitched seven quality innings to record his first victory since the season opener at Mercer.
Trailing 3-1 in the bottom of the fifth, Lee came up with his first crucial hit of the game, a two-run double to the power alley in left center that scored
Travis Redmon and
Daniel Pugh to tie the game.
The Cougars (7-16) regained the lead in the top of the seventh, before the Eagle bats came alive in the bottom half of the inning. #J.D. Ashbrook# and Pugh lead off the inning with a walk and a single to bring up Lee. Lee then belted his 10th homer of the season, an absolute bomb to strait-away center, and the big inning was on.
Taylor Davis followed with an RBI groundout and
Andrew Deeds jacked his fourth home run of the season down the left field line. Ashbrook and Pugh finished the inning with an RBI single and an RBI sacrifice fly to give MSU an 11-5 lead.
Josh Schneider came in to finish off the Cougars allowing a run on two hits over the final two innings.
Bottoms look to be back in mid-season form after missing two weeks with an injury. The senior allowed 4 earned runs over his seven innings of work, striking out two.
Bottoms did get help from his teammates in the field as Lee and Deeds both made several outstanding fielding plays over the course of the game. Bottoms also helped his own cause when he made a bare handed play on a weekly hit chopper to the front left of the mound.
Lee finished the day 3-5 with five RBIs, while Pugh, Ashbrook, and
Michael Fear all tallied a pair of hits. Pugh and Deeds also recorded a pair of RBIs in the game.
The win pushed the Eagles (15-14) record above .500 for the first time since the season-opening weekend.
The three-game series between the Eagles and the Cougars continues tomorrow with a 1:00 p.m. first pitch.
