Game Two Box Score (HTML | PDF)

MOREHEAD, Ky. –
Morehead State baseball was swept by UT Martin Saturday afternoon at Allen Field. The Eagles held a 9-4 advantage in game one before a late rally by the Skyhawks gave them a 10-9 victory. In game two a seven-run sixth inning propelled UTM to a 17-8 win. The losses drop MSU’s record to 23-21 and 5-8 in the Ohio Valley Conference. UTM improves to 22-24 and 7-10 in the OVC.

Game One Recap

Morehead State could not make a 9-4 lead hold up as three home runs in the final three innings boosted the UT Martin Skyhawks past MSU in game one of a Saturday double dip.

MSU got on the board first, when Cameron Flynn scored on an error by UTM left fielder Brent Morris. Andrew Deeds singled through the left side and the ball slipped between Morris’ legs to allow Flynn to score from second.

Flynn again factored into the scoring in the bottom of the third, this time producing a two-out, two-run single off the wall in right to give MSU a 3-0 lead.

The Skyhawks got on the board when Wes Patterson belted a two-run homer in the top of the fourth off of Eagle starter Michael Bottoms. Bottoms allowed three earned in five innings of work on the day.

Back to back doubles by #J.D. Ashbrook and Daniel Pugh# produced three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Ashbrook’s liner down the left field line drove in Bottoms and Travis Redmon, and Pugh drove a ball into the left center gap to score Ashbrook.

Two more runs by UTM and three by MSU made the score 9-4 heading into the seventh inning before UTM put together a six-run rally over the final third of the game to take the lead.

Jake Owen hit a grand slam in the top of the seventh after it looked like Trey Smith had induced a double-play ball to record the first two outs of the inning. The grounder off the bat Patterson was hit directly at Drew Lee at shortstop, but took a funny carom and bounced off Lee’s shoulder, loading the bases with nobody out. Owen followed with the grand slam that cut the MSU lead to 9-8.

Matt Young tied the game with a solo shot to right center lead off the eighth, and then Morris hit a solo-shot off Josh Schneider with two outs in the ninth to give the Skyhawks the lead.

Dan Tobik, who pitched the final four innings and allowed no runs on three hits, then got the Eagles in order in the bottom of the inning to end the game.

Bottoms and Lee each tallied three hits to lead MSU, while Ashbrook, Pugh, and Flynn all drove in a pair.

Game Two Recap

UT Martin banged out twenty hits and outscored Morehead State 17-8 to take the nightcap of Saturday’s double header. UTM lead for most of the seven-inning game and used a seven-run sixth inning to pull away for good. Taylor Davis homered twice to lead MSU.

After the Skyhawks plated a run in the first inning, MSU evened the score on an Andrew Deeds sacrifice fly that scored Michael Bottoms in the bottom of the second.

Wes Patterson then put UTM back in front with a two-run single in the top of the third. The Skyhawks tacked on two more in the fourth, this time using a Trey Karlen double and a Ty Nelson sacfrice fly to produce the runs.

MSU made it 5-3 in the bottom of the fourth when Davis jacked his first home run, a towering drive to the flag pole in left center. The jack scored Cameron Flynn who had singled to lead off the inning.

After UTM plated three more in the top of the fifth, Flynn smoked a two-run shot, his 14th of the season, well over the creek in right field to make it 8-5.

The Skyhawks then exploded in the sixth inning; scoring seven times on six hits to blow open the game. Three UTM players hit doubles in the inning that made the score 15-5 after six.

Deeds and Davis would each homer late and UTM would score two more in the seventh to make the final score 17-8.

Davis ended the game 3-for-4 with two homers and four RBIs to lead MSU. Michael Fear and Flynn each recorded two hits in the game.

The Eagles and the Skyhawks will conclude their three game set with a 1:00 P.M. finale tomorrow at Allen Field. All little leaguers who wear their uniforms to the game will receive free admission and there will be a free youth baseball clinic for players aged eighth grade and under after the game.
