JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind.-- Former Morehead State football and basketball standout Carl "Corky" Howerton passed away Monday. A member of the Eagle Athletic Hall of Fame, Howerton was 89.
Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Scott Funeral Home North Chapel, 2515 Veterans Parkway, in Jeffersonville. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the same location. Burial will follow at Cave Hill Cemetery, 701 Baxter Avenue, in Louisville.
Howerton is one of just nine Hall of Fame members to be inducted as a multiple-sport honoree. Inducted in 1989, he played both football and basketball from 1940 to 1943 and his athletic highlights included a 90-yard touchdown run.

"Howerton was born on October 27, 1921 in Carter County, KY. He grew up in Olive Hill, KY, where he became known as ""Corky."" Family and friends remember his wit, charm and entertaining stories about life in Eastern Kentucky. As a student in Olive Hill and at Morehead College - now Morehead State University - Howerton was a star athlete. Howerton graduated in the spring of 1943 and enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps to serve during World War II. He completed officer training as a lieutenant and served in Tinian, Saipan and Okinawa during the war. He occupied Nagasaki after the war. Following his service, Howerton attended the University of Louisville Dental School. He graduated in 1951. That same year, he married Maxine Ann Munich of Clarksville, Ind., moved to Jeffersonville and opened his own practice. He retired in 1985. Howerton was a disabled veteran, a lifelong member of the Jeffersonville Elks Country Club and an avid golfer. He scored two holes in one. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lonnie Wallace Howerton, Sr. and Goldie Alice Howerton; and his sister, Christine Adams. Survivors include his brother, Lonnie Wallace Howerton, Jr., and his wife, Phyllis of Louisville; his wife, Maxine Ann Howerton; his daughter, Deborah Christie of Scottsburg, IN; his son, Gary Howerton and his wife, Dianne of Bowling Green, KY; his son, John Howerton of Scottsdale, AZ; his son, Daniel Howerton and his wife, Lynn of Jeffersonville; his grandchildren, Lauren and Tracey Howerton, both of Boulder, CO, and Christina and Steven Howerton, both of Jeffersonville; and five nieces and nephews.
