Jonsson Takes Medalist Honors To Lead Eagles To Tourney Win

MOREHEAD, Ky.—Morehead State women’s golf cruised to its first tournament victory of the year, scoring a 299 on the final day of the Murray State Drake Creek Invitational to hold on to first place with an 893. MSU’s Emma Jonsson and Marisa Kamelgarn took medalist and second place honors respectively.

The Eagles had two sub-300 rounds in the 54-hole event, winning by a commanding 16 strokes over second-place Western Kentucky. MSU has finished in first place in both events it has played in this season.

Jonsson, a junior, who led the field after two rounds with a 148, checked in Tuesday with a 70, the lowest individual round of the tournament to score a 218 (75-73-70). The 70 was a career-low round for her and the 218 was a career-low 54-hole total.

Kamelgarn, a sophomore, was tied for sixth after two rounds, but the sophomore scored the second-lowest round of the tournament and equaled her best round of the year, shooting a 71 Tuesday to finish second with a 222 (73-78-71).

“I’m happy with everyone playing their game and really working on putting the ball in the hole. Every hole is a new hole and the ability to play with that attitude is what separates the good players from bad players,” coach Stephanie Barker said. I’m proud of Emma and Marissa -- shooting a 70 and 71 is a great way to finish up the tournament. Anytime we can break 300 it’s a good thing and that’s one of our goals this year. That’s what we’re shooting for every tournament.”

Freshman Sofia Petterson, who began the tournament with a first-round 71, finished tied for sixth with a 228 (71-78-79). Senior Paige Laussier finished 13th overall with a 230 (74-77-79) and Emma Eksell carded a 233 (77-73-83) to tie for 16th.

Freshman Amalie Munck played as an individual, finishing ninth overall with a 229 (79-75-75).
Four other OVC schools, host Murray State (third, 926), Eastern Kentucky (fourth, 931), Austin Peay (sixth, 940) and Tennessee Tech (seventh, 950) are competing in the event.
