MOREHEAD, Ky. – Former Eagle All-American linebacker Wes McDermott has signed with the La Crosse Spartans of the Indoor Football League, the team announced today.
The Spartans who are located in La Crosse, Wisconsin, play in the North Central Division of the IFL and are coached by former Green Bay Packer defensive tackle Gilbert Brown. The IFL was created in 2009 and consisted of 19 teams and in 2010 the league expanded to 25 teams. The Spartans finished the 2010 season at 3-11.
“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to continue my career and I am excited to play for the Spartans,” said McDermott. “I am honored to be playing for coach Brown who was a great player in the NFL, it will be great to learn from him with all of the experience he brings to the team.”
McDermott, the Louisville, Ky. native, was named Associated Press Third Team All-American and was named the Pioneer Football League (PFL) Defensive Player of the Year in 2009. McDermott was also named to the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) Athletic Directors Association Academic All-Star Team.
McDermott finished his career in the top five of MSU’s career tackles list at 316 total tackles. McDermott notched 48 tackles-for-loss in his career which puts him 19th in FCS history and he averaged 1.09 tackles-for-loss throughout his career which puts him tied for 24th all-time in the FCS.
