MUNCIE, Ind.--Morehead State men’s basketball has a busy week, with three games in six days, starting with a difficult non-conference trip to Muncie, Ind. to face Ball State Monday at 7:00 p.m.
The game is the first meeting between the two schools in 35 years with each team holding a single win in the short series. At 12-8, the Eagles are coming off a pair of losses that included a streak-snapping home setback. BSU is ranked 24th in the mid-major top 25 and has won seven straight, and is perfect at home this year.
Morehead State is 7-4 in non-conference games this season, including wins over College of Charleston and Kent State, both of which were ranked in the mid-major top 25 at the time. In fact, MSU is 3-1 this season against mid-major ranked teams. The flip side is that the Eagles are 2-7 on the road this season, and 1-4 in road non-conference games. The only loss to a mid-major ranked team came on the road.
MSU needs its offense to begin clicking again after posting back-to-back games in the 40s for the first time since 2005-06. The back-to-back 40s stopped a string of seven consecutive games where the Eagles scored 69 points or more.
Ball State is an offensive-minded team that averaged 69.3 points with a +8.1 scoring margin, hitting shots at a 46 percent clip. The Cardinals have three players with double-figure scoring averages, led by Jarrod Jones’ 15.8 points and 8.6 rebounds per game. Defensively BSU limits their opponents to 61.2 points per game. BSU opponents average less than 40 percent field goal shooting and under 29 percent from long range.
Morehead State’s other two games are both Ohio Valley Conference contests and both are against the top two teams in the league. Co-leaders Tennessee State and Austin Peay come to Johnson Arena Thursday and Saturday respectively.
