Women's Basketball Uses Stellar Defensive Effort to Cruise Past KCU in Exhibition Game

MOREHEAD, Ky. --
The Morehead State women's basketball team used 29 steals to propel it to an 95-58 exhibition win over Kentucky Christian Thursday night at Johnson Arena.

The game was called with 2:40 left due to a fire alarm in the arena.

Junior Ashar Harris had 19 points and 13 rebounds, while senior Courtney Lumpkin totaled 17 points. Freshman Casey Ryans tallied 14 points, seven rebounds and five steals. The Eagles forced the Lady Knights into 41 turnovers and had a 49-37 advantage in the rebounding column.

The Eagles utilized all 14 players who dressed for the game, and 12 reached the scoring column. Freshman Natalie Greenwell rounded out four Eagle players in double figures with 10 markers. Senior Linda Dixon totaled nine points and five assists, and freshman Almesha Jones tied for team-high honors with five assists as well.

Ryans, who shot 7-of-8 from the field, was a key part in the Eagles' outscoring the Lady Knights 64-24 in the paint, and the 41 KCU mistakes turned into 42 Eagle points. Harris, who ranked third in the nation in rebounding last season, hit 9-of-14 from the field, and grabbed seven of her boards off the offensive glass.

MSU shot 43 percent from the field, hitting 38 of its 88 shot attempts. KCU managed to hit 41 percent from the floor. Kaycee Denton was the lone Lady Knight in double figures with 15 points.

The Eagles raced out to a 14-4 advantage, holding KCU to just two field goal in the first seven minutes. MSU went on to push the lead to as much as 25 (39-14) with 4:02 left in the first half before heading to the locker room with a 45-24 advantage.

MSU upped its lead to 78-47 with 7:42 left in the game, and KCU never cut the deficit below 30 the remainder of the half.

Morehead State closes its exhibition schedule on Monday, Nov. 7 against Asbury University at 6 p.m. ET.
