MOREHEAD, Ky. -- Morehead State's women's basketball team used 12 three-pointers and a 24-4 run to open the game as the hosts rolled past visiting Asbury University 96-67 in an exhibition game Monday night at Johnson Arena.
Five Morehead State players reached double figures in the scoring column. Freshman Natalie Greenwell led the way with 16 points, followed by sophomore Allie Turner (14), junior Ashar Harris (11), senior Courtney Lumpkin (10) and freshman Casey Ryans (10).
MSU also held a 65-39 rebounding edge, including 35 offensive rebounds. Harris pulled down a game-best 14 boards for her second preseason double-double. Freshman Mackenzie Arledge grabbed 12 rebounds, while sophomore Tyler Ituen corralled six boards, including four on the offense end.
MSU finished the night 12-of-39 (.308) from three-point range. The home team also took 96 shots in the 40-minute contest, hitting 39 for a 41 percent field-goal efficiency.
Asbury had three players reach double figures, led by Laura Carroll and Trenia Barbee with 14 and Lakin Griffin with 11. Griffin yanked down with a team-high nine rebounds for the AU Eagles.
Morehead State raced out to a 20-point advantage in the first eight minutes on the strength of six three-pointers, including three by Greenwell. Asbury scored four quick points to cut it to 24-8, but the Eagles scored the next six to push ahead 30-8 with 10:34 left in the first half.
MSU led by 23 later in the half before heading to the locker room with a 53-32 lead. The Eagles shot 46 percent (22-of-48) in the opening period and out-rebounded Asbury 31-18.
MSU continued to hold a lead of 20-plus points throughout most of the second half. Asbury did cut the Eagle lead to 17 (70-53) with 10:58 left after a Barbee layup, but MSU pushed back out ahead by 25 (81-56) with an 11-3 run, capped by a three-pointer from Turner. MSU’s big lead was 31 points late in the second half.
Morehead State garnered 37 points off 21 Asbury turnovers. In its two exhibition contests, MSU averaged 95.5 points per outing and forced 62 turnovers.
The Eagles open the regular season on Friday at 7 p.m. hosting 15th-ranked Kentucky.
