Baseball Loses Saturday Twinbill to Govs

MOREHEAD, Ky. --
The Morehead State baseball team dropped both games of Saturday afternoon's doubleheader against Ohio Valley Conference opponent Austin Peay. The Governors won the first game of the twinbill, 7-3, and the seven-inning nightcap in come from behind fashion, 12-10.

The Governors (21-19, 9-4 OVC) took a 1-0 lead in the second inning of game one following three consecutive singles off starter Trey Smith. Centerfielder Rolando Gautier drove in sophomore John Hogan from third on a groundout to score the first run of the game.

Smith took his ninth loss of the season pitching 4.2 innings, allowing seven earned runs and striking out nine.

Austin Peay tagged on another run in the fourth as Jordan Hankins smacked a double into the right field corner scoring catcher Matt Wollenzin from second base.

MSU (7-32, 3-9 OVC) retaliated in the bottom of the fourth putting a three spot on the board and taking the lead, 3-2. Govs starter Jeremy Dobbs walked Nick Duff with the bases loaded to bring in the first run and Travis Redmon and Eric Bainer crossed the plate on an RBI single up the middle by left fielder Daniel Pugh.

Bainer led the Eagles with three hits going 3-for-5 at the plate.

A five-run fifth inning gave the Govs their biggest lead of the night, a lead they never again relinquished, 7-3. Hogan brought home two runs on a towering home run over the centerfield wall, scoring third baseman Greg Bachman and himself on the roundtripper.

Lefty Jeremy Dobbs earned his eighth win of the season for Austin Peay. He tossed seven innings and struck out six.

In game two, the Eagles jumped on Govs starter Jack Snoddgrass scoring nine unanswered runs in the first three frames.

Deeds drove in the first run of the nightcap slapping a single off the right field wall driving in Pugh from third and came home on a sacrifice by Michael Fear. Junior Taylor Davis came home on a fielding error in the inning to tally the second run.

The Eagles drove in two more the second to extend their lead to five runs. Deeds brought home another run on sacrifice fly to right dropped Cody Hudson scoring Duff from third. Fear drove in the fifth run on the inning's second sacrifice fly to right bringing home Pugh.

A four-hit third drove in four more Eagle runs and gave MSU a 9-0 lead. Davis and Fear drove in three runs on singles to the outfield and Deeds scored on a RBI double struck down the left field line by Eric Bainer.

Sophomore Garrick Whittle held Peay to two hits over the first three innings and struck out five.

In the fourth, three Governors crossed home plate to begin their rally. Second baseman Jon Clinard drove in two of the runs on a single past a diving Austin Haney into centerfield.

MSU plated another run in the bottom of the fourth on a RBI double by Luke Bainer off the wall in centerfield. Shortstop Austin Haney scored the run from first on the throw home.

Whittle left the game in the sixth inning holding onto a one-run lead against Austin Peay. He struck out seven in his first outing since being named OVC Pitcher of the Week, but walked four.

The Governors blasted the Eagles in the sixth driving in six runs off Whittle, Matthew Robertson and Matt Cartwright. Clinard drove in two runs on a double to right centerfield. He went 2-for-4 and drove in four RBI.

Pinch hitter Haskell Fink walked to drive in the game-tying run in the top of the seventh to force extra innings and in the ninth drove in the game-winning run on a solo homer to centerfield.

Reliever Cody Gibson took the loss for MSU pitching two innings and allowing two earned runs, including the go-ahead bomb by Fink.

Senior Ryne Harper earned the win for Peay fanning four Eagles in the final 2.1 innings.

The Eagles return to Allen Field to wrap their three-game set against the Governors Sunday beginning at 1 p.m. EDT.
