JACKSONVILLE, Ala. -- The Morehead State baseball team suffered a game-three loss to Jacksonville State at Rudy Abbott Field Saturday afternoon, 6-3. The win punched the Gamecocks' ticket to the postseason and earned the series sweep.
The Ohio Valley Conference leader in home runs, junior
Taylor Davis, hit a dinger that plated two Eagle runs in the first to put Morehead State ahead early 2-0. Right fielder
Luke Bainer doubled into the left field corner with one out on the first pitch from JSU starter Jordan Beistline. Davis followed Bainer’s double with the two-run bomb over the left field wall, his 12th home run of the season.
The Gamecocks (31-21/13-9 OVC) equaled MSU’s offensive output in the bottom of the first. Jake Sharrock and Scott Underwood recorded consecutive one-out singles and scored unearned runs on a fielder’s choice and a single up the middle by Blake Seguin.
Jacksonville State took the lead on a double down the right field line by Eric Underwood in the third inning. Underwood’s double scored catcher Sam Eberle from first base and gave the Gamecocks a 3-2 lead.
JSU continued to drive in runs and add to their lead, scoring three in the sixth and ending the afternoon for starter
Noah Smallwood. Smallwood, in the final start of his freshman season, pitched 5.2 innings allowing six runs and struck out five in the season-ending loss.
Sharrock went 4-for-5 and drove in two runs for the Gamecocks. His two runs scored in the sixth as he drove an RBI single into right center.
The Eagles (10-38/6-15 OVC) brought home a run in the top as third baseman
Andrew Deeds reached third base on a three-base throwing error by reliever Hunter Rivers. He scored on a groundout by
Eric Bainer.
Davis led Eagle batters in the finale going 2-for-3 with the home run and two RBI.
