MOREHEAD, Ky. -- The Morehead State men’s basketball team (8-10, 2-3) returns to Johnson Arena on Saturday to open a three-game homestand against Ohio Valley Conference rival Eastern Kentucky (10-8, 4-2). The contest, which is scheduled to tip at 7:30 p.m. ET, will follow a 5:15 p.m. women’s game between MSU and EKU.
The game will be webcast live on OVCSports.tv. It will also be broadcast on the Eagle Sports Network, which includes four affiliates in Eastern Kentucky and MSUEagles.com.
Morehead State has won its last two home games, with victories over Ball State and Austin Peay. The Eagles are 56-9 (.862) at Johnson Arena over the past five years.
Eastern Kentucky has won seven of its last 10 contests, with victories over Brescia, North Carolina Central, Georgia Southern, Jacksonville State, Austin Peay, Tennessee State and Southeast Missouri. The Colonels went 15-16 overall and 9-9 in the OVC a season ago.
Morehead State is paced by senior Ty Proffitt (9.9 ppg), junior Kahlil Owens (5.3 rpg) and senior Lamont Austin (3.4 apg). Proffitt registered a career-high 19 points on 6-of-6 from the free-throw line last Wednesday at Tennessee State, while junior Marsell Holden added 12 points on 4-of-11 from beyond the arc.
Eastern Kentucky is led by senior Jaron Jones (15.5 ppg), freshman Eric Stutz (5.4 rpg) and junior Mike DiNunno (2.7 apg). Jones recorded 17 points on 8-of-13 from the field last Thursday at Austin Peay, while freshman Timmy Knipp tallied 11 points and seven rebounds.
Donnie Tyndall is in his sixth season as the head coach at Morehead State (104-80, .565) and his seventh year in charge of a college basketball program (134-85, .612).
Jeff Neubauer is in his seventh season as the head coach at Eastern Kentucky (112-94, .544) after spending three years as the top assistant at West Virginia.
Eastern Kentucky owns a 95-77 advantage in the all-time series against Morehead State. The teams split a pair of meetings in 2010-11, with both teams winning on the road.
Kenneth Faried, who was taken by the Denver Nuggets in the first round of the 2011 NBA Draft, averaged 14.5 points and 18.0 rebounds in two games against the Colonels last year. Proffitt added 9.5 points per contest for MSU.
