JACKSONVILLE Ala. -- Morehead State's women's basketball team continues its OVC road trip with a Monday matinee at Jacksonville State. Tipoff at Pete Mathews Coliseum is set for 4 p.m. ET, and the game can be heard live on the Eagle Sports Network.
The Eagles (5-10/2-1 OVC) are coming off an 18-point league loss at Tennessee Tech Saturday night. MSU managed to shoot just 31 percent and hit only three three-pointers. The Gamecocks (3-14/0-4 OVC) have lost eight consecutive games, including a 67-57 setback to Tennessee State at home Saturday night.
While MSU is hoping this year’s regular-season games against JSU are not as close as last year’s, those games did provide high drama. In the first matchup in Morehead, JSU hit a three-pointer in the final seconds to send the game into overtime. The Eagles had a chance to tie the contest and send it to a second extra frame, but a missed free throw thwarted that, and JSU won 81-80.
The Eagles returned the favor though here in Jacksonville. Down one with 4.5 seconds left, the Eagles advanced the ball up the floor, and Ashar Harris hit a cutting Allie Turner, who knocked down the game-winning layup with 0.6 seconds left as MSU won 65-64.
The teams met again in the OVC Tournament quarterfinals in Nashville, and the Eagles erased a 21-point second half deficit to rally and win 82-67. Overall, MSU leads the series with JSU 10-8.
MSU is being led by senior guard Linda Dixon with 13.7 ppg, while Harris grabs an OVC-best 12.1 rpg. The Gamecocks get a team-high 12.0 ppg from Briana Morrow. Danielle Vaughn grabs a team-high 8.2 rpg. JSU out-rebounds its opponents by one per game and had 58 total boards in its loss to TSU Saturday.
Morehead State will return home next to host Eastern Kentucky on Saturday, Jan. 14. Tipoff time is scheduled for 5:15 p.m. ET.
