Men's Golf Finishes Fifth at Gary Freeman Invitational

FINAL RESULTS

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.
-- The Morehead State men’s golf team climbed two spots on Tuesday to finish fifth out of 11 teams at Bethune-Cookman’s Gary Freeman Invitational.  The Eagles posted a 294 on the final day to close out the 54-hole affair with a score of 898.

“This was a good tournament for us,” Morehead State Head Coach Dr. Rex Chaney said.  “I’m encouraged with the way our kids played, especially in the final round.  We haven’t been on the course much in Morehead, so it was good to play in really nice weather and shoot decent scores.”

Morehead State junior Jared Flanery tied for 10th individually with a 75-75-72--222, while senior Crit Reddick shared 13th place with a 74-76-74--224.

“Jared and Crit played well,” Chaney said.  “Jared was in the top 10, and that’s always great in an 11-team tournament.  Crit made 10 birdies through the first 36 holes -- and that was impressive, too.”

Junior Sam Zirnheld, senior Dean Schneider and sophomore Michael Pinsonneault all tied for 23rd with scores of 229.  Pinsonneault fired a 73 on the final day, while Schneider posted a 75 and Zirnheld registered a 76.

MSU was one of just two teams in the tournament to have all five players finish in the top 25.

“We have several kids who have now been part of the program for at least three years,” Chaney said.  “We’re starting to see some growth and maturity with the young men we put on the golf course.  If our guys continue to work hard, we should have a pretty nice team by the end of this spring.”

Laval University, from Quebec City in Canada, won the tournament with a 300-285-288--873.  Junior Clint Wilhelm from Florida Atlantic was the individual medalist with a 72-67-73--212.

The tournament was played on the LPGA International’s Champions Course, which is a par 72.

Morehead State returns to action March 12-13 when it travels to Jackson, Tenn., for the Grover Page Classic.  The Eagles are scheduled to have three more regular-season spring tournaments, plus the OVC Championship in Dickson, Tenn.
