Weekly Football Awards Now Honor Former Eagle Greats

Head Football Coach Rob Tenyer
MOREHEAD, Ky. -- The Morehead State football program has started a new tradition with its 2013 weekly team awards.  Six of the eight honors now bear the name of former Eagle greats.

"There have been so many tremendous players in Morehead State football history, and it's important for us to acknowledge their contributions," Head Coach Rob Tenyer said.  "Naming awards after our Eagle greats is just one small token of our appreciation for everything these men have done."

The Morehead State coaches hand out weekly accolades throughout the season to the Offensive Most Valuable Player (Chris Berry), Defensive MVP (Dan Gooch), Special Forces MVP (Mike Brown), Big Stick/Sack (Dave Haverdick), Big Block (Ed Mignery) and Game Breaker (David Dinkins).

The Eagle staff members also honor an Offensive and Defensive Scout Team Player of the Week.  Nearly half of the team has been recognized through the first six weeks of the 2013 campaign.

Berry, Brown, Dinkins, Gooch and Haverdick are all members of the Morehead State Athletic Hall of Fame.  Dinkins (#8) and Haverdick (#77) also have their jerseys retired outside of Jayne Stadium.

"When I became this program's head coach (in December), I said building and maintaining relationships with former players would be a high priority," Tenyer said.  "That continues to be the case today.  Our staff has reached out to hundreds of football alums over the past eight months."

Morehead State is idle this weekend.  The Eagles return to action on Oct. 19 at Pioneer Football League opponent Valparaiso.  Four of MSU's last five games this season will be at Jayne Stadium in Morehead.

"I tell our current players to respect the past and continue to build the tradition moving forward," Tenyer added.  "I usually ask them, 'how they want to be remembered?'  It gets back to our three Cs, which are character, community and championship effort.  That's what we need to be about."
