MOREHEAD, Ky. - After starting the season with nine straight games on the road, the Morehead State baseball team returns to Sonny Allen Field for its 2013 home opening series with the Ball State Cardinals.
The Eagles (4-5) are coming off of a 13-4 loss to No. 4 Louisville on Tuesday night. It was MSU's first matchup with a nationally-ranked opponent this season. Ball State enters the series with a 3-4 record, with its three wins coming against Middle Tennessee, Bradley and Lipscomb.
A few notes heading into the series:
• MSU matched Louisville at the plate on Tuesday, with each team securing 11 hits in the contest.
• After starting the season with nine straight road contests, MSU is now entering a stretch of nine straight home games, its longest homestand of the season.
• Both senior shortstop Chase Greenwell and junior designated hitter Bobby Burns lead the team in RBI, with eight on the season.
• Junior left-hander Noah Smallwood pitched a one-hitter through eight innings in MSU’s 3-2 loss to Gardner-Webb. He recorded eight strikeouts while only walking one batter, and is expected to start game two of the series.
• Freshman third baseman Alan Mocahbee leads the team in batting average after nine games at .361 (13-for-36). Four other Eagles - Taylor Pickens (.333), Chris Robinson (.321), Kane Sweeney (.313) and Drew Williams (.304) - are also hitting above the .300 mark.
• Sophomore right-hander Aaron Goe leads the Eagles in earned run average (1.38) through 13 innings pitched, while keeping opposing batters to a .286 average. He is expected to start game three of the series.
