NASHVILLE --
The Morehead State baseball team suffered a 2-0 setback to Belmont on Thursday afternoon in game one of an Ohio Valley Conference series at E.S. Rose Park.

The Eagles fall to 9-16 on the season and 4-6 in Ohio Valley Conference play with the pitchers'-duel loss, while the Bruins improve to 18-6 and 6-1 in conference action.

Belmont senior right-hander Chase Brookshire, the OVC leader in earned run average, pitched seven scoreless innings while allowing only three hits to pick up the win.

Despite only allowing five hits and two runs in 7.1 innings, Morehead State sophomore right-hander Blake Smith (1-3) was charged with the loss.

“Blake (Smith) pitched a great game for the second start in a row,” Head Coach Mike McGuire said. “It’s a shame he has to take a loss on a performance like that.”

Sophomore first baseman Kane Sweeney (2-for-4) and sophomore center fielder Duran Elmore (2-for 3) were the only Eagles to register multiple hits on the afternoon.

Belmont took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third on an RBI single from sophomore center fielder Drew Ferguson.

BU manufactured the game’s final run in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI single from sophomore third baseman Matt Beaty.

“This is a big ballpark, and it plays that way,” McGuire said. “Line drives and singles are what get wins here, so we are going to have to cut down on the fly balls and strikeouts the rest of the weekend.”

Game two of the series begins at 4 p.m. ET on Friday. Links to live stats and audio will be available on MSUEagles.com.
