ATHENS, Ohio --
Despite allowing only two more hits than Ohio, the Morehead State baseball team was outscored, 9-1, on Tuesday afternoon at Bob Wren Stadium.

The loss snapped a four-game win streak for the Eagles, who fall to 13-29 on the season. With the win, Ohio moves to 10-28.

The Eagles finished the game with eight hits to the Bobcats’ ten, and only two of those hits came before the sixth inning.

“I felt like we came in here playing pretty well, but we struggled today,” Head Coach Mike McGuire said. “Our pitching wasn’t there and we didn’t get most of our hits until the game had already been decided.”

MSU’s sole run came in the top of the seventh, when sophomore right fielder Brandon Rawe crushed a solo home run over the left field wall, his third of the season.

Ohio jumped out to a 6-0 lead, driving in one in the bottom of the second before a five-run third inning that was highlighted by a home run to left center from senior shortstop Dan Schmidt. The Bobcats added one in the fifth and two in the sixth to close out the victory.

Senior shortstop Chase Greenwell and senior first baseman Bobby Lewis were the only Eagles to register multiple hit efforts, each going 2-for-4 with a single and a double in the contest.

With a single up the middle in the eighth, sophomore third baseman Kane Sweeney extended his reached base streak to 33 straight games.

In the first start of his MSU career, freshman right-hander Craig Pearcy was charged with the loss, allowing six runs on four hits in 2.2 innings. Ohio junior lefty Sean Kennedy (2-0) picked up the win, allowing only three hits and one run in 5.1 innings of relief.

After back-to-back weekend road series, the Eagles return to Allen Field for an Ohio Valley Conference matchup with SIU Edwardsville. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET, with 1 p.m. starts scheduled for Saturday and Sunday. Weather permitting, all three games will be live streamed over the OVC Digital Network.

“It’s a very big weekend for us,” McGuire said. “We’ve got to put this one behind us and get ready to win a ballgame on Friday night.”
