MOREHEAD, Ky. -- The Eastern Kentucky baseball team tallied 17 extra-base hits, including eight home runs, en route to a 30-14 win over Morehead State on Sunday afternoon at Allen Field.
The Colonels improve to 9-19 overall and 5-7 in the Ohio Valley Conference with their fourth consecutive victory, while the Eagles slip to 9-22 on the campaign and 4-11 in league play.
Eastern Kentucky scored in eight different innings and unloaded for a season-high 33 hits. Nine Colonels posted multi-hit performances, while seven EKU batters recorded at least one RBI.
Freshman left fielder Kyle Nowlin led EKU by going 5-for-6 with five runs and three RBI. Freshman third baseman Doug Teegarden added a 3-for-7 effort with three scores and seven knocked in.
Nowlin and senior right fielder Shaun Ball crushed two homers apiece, while four other Colonels drilled one each. Ball finished the afternoon 3-for-7 with a pair of runs and five driven in.
Morehead State, which plated 13 runs in a four-inning stretch, notched 17 hits. Five Eagles collected multi-hit efforts, while four MSU hitters registered at least one RBI.
Senior center fielder Taylor Pickens, sophomore left fielder Brandon Rawe and junior designated hitter Bobby Burns all went 3-for-5 with two runs and three RBI.
Pickens, Rawe, Burns and freshman first baseman Clark Pence smashed one roundtripper each. Sophomore right fielder Kane Sweeney also extended his on-base streak to 22 contests.
Senior left-hander Shane Grimm, the first of three EKU pitchers, improved to 3-3 with the win, despite allowing eight earned runs and eight hits in five innings. He walked three and struck out four.
Freshman right-hander Matt Anderson, the first of six MSU hurlers, fell to 0-4 with the loss. He yielded nine earned runs and nine hits in two innings. All six Eagle pitchers allowed at least one run.
Eastern Kentucky jumped out to a 9-0 advantage after three innings. The Colonels added four runs in the fifth, two in the sixth, seven in the seventh, five in the eighth and three in the ninth.
The Eagles blasted back-to-back homers for the first time this year in the fourth. Burns launched a solo shot to right before Pence smoked a long ball to left. It was MSU’s third multi-HR game in 2013.
Morehead State’s biggest frame -- six runs on four hits -- came in the sixth. That inning was highlighted by a two-run shot from Pickens and two-run double by Burns.
The Eagles return to action on Tuesday at Northern Kentucky. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. ET. It will be the first of nine consecutive road games for Morehead State.
