Rifle Wins Season Opener at VMI

LEXINGTON, Va. --
The Morehead State rifle team boasted the top four smallbore scores and six of the top seven air rifle totals as the Eagles won a dual match over VMI Saturday in the 2014-15 season opener.

MSU edged the VMI mixed squad, 4,554-4,468. The VMI women were third with a 4,168. The match was the debut for new MSU Head Coach Alan Joseph, who enjoyed a 20+ year career leading the rifle program at Xavier.

Senior Ethan Cole recorded a 574 in both disciplines. He led the MSU shooters in smallbore and finished third on the team on the air gun. Freshman Dan Hall tied for the team-high score in air rifle in his collegiate debut, scoring a 574.

In air rifle, freshman Joe Fischer tallied a 572 to rank second on the squad. Senior Jumell Wilson turned in a 568, while junior Rusell Smith fired a 561. Freshman Haley Wilson notched a 570 air rifle scorecard in her first collegiate match, while senior Christian Hashagen (569), Jumell Wilson (566) and Fischer (565) rounded out the top six in air rifle for the visitors.

Hall added a 559 in air rifle, followed by Hashagen (547), freshman Seth Baker (547) and Haley Wilson (546). Junior Taylor Johnson rounded out the lineup with a 564 air score and a 533 smallbore total.

Morehead State hosts affiliate Ohio Valley Conference member Columbus State for the home opener Saturday at the ranges in Button Auditorium.
