CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. -- The Austin Peay volleyball team used an 8-1 advantage in aces and 53-49 edge in digs to register a 25-20, 27-25, 25-23 Ohio Valley Conference win over Morehead State on Saturday afternoon at the Dunn Center.
The Governors improve to 10-10 on the season, 4-0 in conference action and 4-1 at home. The Eagles slip to 0-17 overall, 0-4 in league play and 0-6 on the road. Morehead State still holds a 45-28 upper hand all-time against Austin Peay.
APSU was +5 in the service department, with eight aces and just three errors. MSU was -12 in that category, with only one ace and 13 miscues. Senior outside hitter Jada Stotts led the Governors with four serves that could not be returned, while sophomore outside hitter Sammie Ebright added three.
The serving numbers overshadowed Morehead State's advantages of .252-.188 in hitting percentage, 43-40 in kills, 39-34 in assists and 8-2 in team blocks. The Eagles opened with a .186 offensive clip, but turned in a .275 attack percentage in the second set and finished with a .303 mark.
Sophomore middle blocker Sydney Schuler led MSU with a career-best 10 kills. Junior middle blocker Hannah Sigala added a match-high six blocks, to go along with seven kills and a .538 hitting percentage. Sophomore outside hitter Bailey Nichol added nine winners for the Eagles.
Ebright collected a match-high 15 digs for Austin Peay, while sophomore libero Syd Litchfield joined her in double figures with 10. No Governor reached double-figure kills, while junior setter Aubrey Marsellis handed out a match-best 28 kills. APSU hit .200 in each of the final two sets.
The match featured 16 ties and eight lead changes. The score was even 11 times in the second set.
Morehead State will play four of its next five matches at Wetherby Gym. The stretch begins Friday and Saturday when the Eagles host UT Martin and Southeast Missouri. After a road contest at Dayton, MSU will then host Tennessee Tech on Oct. 17 and Jacksonville State on Oct. 18.
