FINAL SCORES (PDF) -- TEAM | INDIVIDUAL | COMBORICHMOND, Ky. -- The Morehead State women's golf team finished second out of 12 schools in the 36-hole EKU Lady Colonel Classic. The Eagles trimmed 12 strokes off their opening round score to register a 305 in the second-and-final round on Saturday at the Arlington Country Club.
"I'm proud of our young ladies," Head Coach Stephanie Barker said. "Their games have progressed this spring, and they know what they need to work on between now and the Ohio Valley Conference Championship. Our focus continues to be using every opportunity to improve as a team."
Morehead State's conference rival and the tournament's host, Eastern Kentucky, used a 303 on Saturday en route to a two-day total of 616 and first-place finish. The Eagles managed a 36-hole score of 622, while Xavier (628), Marshall (634) and Ohio (638) rounded out the top five.
Freshman Anna Magnusson and sophomore Katie Rice, who both managed two-round 155s, tied for fourth out of 73 golfers. Magnusson carded a 74 in the final round, while Rice posted a 77. Magnusson now owns three top-five performances in 2013-14, while Rice picked up her first.
"Anna and Katie had strong individual performances this weekend in very tough conditions," Barker said. "I know they both feel like they left a few shots out there, but our plan is to build on so much of the good we experienced this week and improve on a couple of things we can easily clean up."
Sophomore Linnea Scholin was three shots behind the Morehead State leaders, while juniors Vanessa Bognot and Hannah Sublett were both four strokes back. Senior Amalie Schott Munck, playing as an individual, carded a 77 in the final round on her way to a 157 and tie for 12th.
Eastern Kentucky freshman Sofie Levin recorded a 75 in the final round to claim medalist honors with a two-round 152. The course played at a par of 72 and yardage of 5,838. The event was originally scheduled for 54 holes, but shortened to two rounds due to heavy rain on Friday morning.
Morehead State returns to action on April 13 with a dual match against Tennessee Tech. The teams will square off at Kearney Hills Golf Course in Lexington, Ky.
