MOREHEAD, Ky. – Former Morehead State linebacker Zack Moore, who served eight seasons as an assistant coach at his alma mater, has returned to the football staff and will coach linebackers.
Following a two-year playing career at MSU in 1997 and 1998, Moore joined the staff in 1999 as a defensive line coach. He also coached defensive backs, linebackers and wide receivers in his first stint.
He served as the program's recruiting coordinator from 2002-06 before accepting a coaching position at Kentucky Christian, where he served as the program's assistant head coach and defensive coordinator from 2007-08 and head coach from 2009-10. For the past four seasons, he was the head coach at East Carter High School in Grayson, Ky.
"I'm blessed and thrilled to be able to return to MSU," Moore said. "This is a special place for my family and me, with many fond memories, both playing and coaching."
Current Morehead State Head Coach Rob Tenyer and Moore served on the same staffs from 2001-06.
"Being a former MSU linebacker and coach will allow Zack to make an immediate impact in recruiting and on the playing field," Tenyer said. "Zack's experience as a head coach and defensive coordinator brings instant credibility, and our players will benefit from his football knowledge."
Moore led Morehead State in 1997 with 76 total tackles, including 64 solo stops. He was named a Football Gazette (FG) Division I-AA Independent All-Star. Moore collected 50 total tackles as a senior in 1998.
A native of Knoxville, Tenn., he attended Tennessee and Walters State Community College before enrolling at Morehead State.
Moore coached the MSU defensive backs from 2004-06, mentoring Football Gazette and Sports Network (SN) Mid-Major All-Americans Charles Byrd, David Hyland and Kwesi Williams. He led the Eagle linebackers in 2002, helping Craig Unger become a FG and SN First-Team Mid-Major All-American.
Moore guided the wide receivers in 2001. Toby Moeves earned FG and SN Mid-Major All-America accolades. He began his coaching career as the defensive ends coach in 1999 and 2000.
Moore earned his bachelor's degree in university studies from Morehead State in 1999 and received master's degrees from MSU in sports administration (2003) and health and physical education (2014).
Moore's father, Alan, was a member of the MSU football squad in the 1970s. His wife, Kelley, is a two-time MSU graduate. Moore and his wife have three daughters, Mackenzie (12), Maci (10) and Madelyn (7).
"Coach Tenyer has a plan in place that can and will lead to success," Moore said. "I'm going to do everything I can to assist him, our staff and players to perform at a championship level in all facets."
