MOREHEAD, Ky. -- Former Morehead State Head Football Coach Jake Hallum has passed away. Leading the Eagles from 1968-71, Hallum guided MSU to three consecutive winning campaigns. Hallum was 76.
Hallum is survived by his wife, Mable, and two sons, Todd and Bart. A visitation is scheduled from 3-8 p.m. Monday at Milward Funeral Home on Southland Drive in Lexington. A second visitation is planned in Hallum's home state on Aug. 17 at Dillard's Funeral Home in Pickens, S.C., to be followed by a private graveside service on Aug. 18.
Hallum, who completed a 24-year coaching career in 1991, served as a senior scout for three National Football League Teams (New England Patriots, Cleveland Browns and Philadelphia Eagles). He was with Philadelphia from 1995-99 before returning to the Eagles in 2012.
Following his MSU stint, Hallum moved to Maryland, where he coached the offensive line from 1972 to 1981. In 1982, he began an eight-year assignment as an assistant at Kentucky. In 1990, he accepted the position of offensive line and tight ends coach at Arizona State. Following the 1991 season, he left the coaching ranks.
After a 3-6-1 finish his first season in 1968, Hallum led Morehead State to back-to-back 6-4 years before going 7-3 in 1971.
A native of Liberty, S.C., he played Newberry (S.C.) (1957-60) and later earned his master's degree from Murray State in 1965. He coached high school football at his alma mater, Pickens High School (1960-62), and made stops at Hopkinsville (Ky.) High School (1962-66) and Paul Blazer High School in Ashland, Ky. (1966-67). Hallum guided the PBHS Tomcats to a state title in 1967.
