MOREHEAD, Ky.— For the second straight game, the fourth quarter was the difference as the Morehead State women's basketball team fell to Southeast Missouri State at Johnson Arena on Thursday night, 89-79.
The loss moves the Eagles to 6-10 overall and 0-2 in league play. SEMO improves to 10-6 and 3-0 in league play.
Â
"We played our best overall basketball for about three quarters, but unfortunately we were unable to maintain that intensity in the fourth quarter," said Head Coach
Greg Todd.
Morehead State entered the fourth quarter leading, 69-61, but could not withstand a ferocious run by the Redhawks, as they outscored the Eagles, 28-10, to get the win.
Junior guard Brianna Mitchell scored 13 of her game-high 21 points in the fourth quarter, including the last nine points, to lead Southeast Missouri State.
Â
MSU was led by junior forward
Shay Steele, who finished with 20 points, four rebounds, and three assists. Junior guard
Brianna McQueen provided a spark off of the bench, scoring 13 points, dishing out eight assists, and snatching seven rebounds.
Natalie Greenwell shot lights out from beyond the arc, as the senior guard went 4-of-8 from three-point territory. Junior forward
Eriel McKee added 14 points, scoring 10 points in the first quarter, and eight rebounds.
Â
"If you would have told me that we were going to get ten more shots, the same amount of free throws, hit one more three-pointer, be even in rebounds, and our assist-to-turnover ratio would be 22-to-11, I would take our chances," said Todd. "Our effort was there and we have to build on it with a good group of women."
Â
Next up for the Eagles are the Skyhawks of UT Martin. Tip-off is set for 3:45 p.m. ET on Saturday.
