EMERSON, Ga. – Sophomore lefthander
Aaron Leasher tossed eight scoreless innings, and junior catcher
Jimmy Wright led an 11-hit attack with a home run, as the Morehead State baseball team knocked off Saint Louis 4-1 at the Perfect Game Complex Sunday.
MSU finished the weekend in Georgia 3-1 and is now 6-2 in 2016. The Billikens, the preseason Atlantic 10 Conference favorite, remained winless at 0-8.
Leasher (2-0) scattered five hits and struck out eight before senior righty
Tyler Keele finished off the win in the ninth.
"I am very proud of how
Aaron Leasher pitched today," said Head Coach
Mike McGuire. "We struggled a bit at the plate a few times, and he kept us in the ball game."
Wright nailed his second home run of the season down the right field line in the second inning and also added an RBI single among his three hits. Junior third baseman
Alex Stephens connected on a pair of hits, including an RBI double in the ninth. He finished the weekend 10-for-19 (.526) with six runs knocked in.
"We are getting a lot of production out of our two catchers, which has been great to see," McGuire added. "And Alex has been seeing the ball very well and taking advantage of his opportunities and driving in runs."
Freshman shortstop
Reid Leonard also cranked two hits, including an RBI single in the eighth frame. The Eagles, who were bidding for their second shutout on the weekend (14-0 vs. Omaha Saturday), had that effort thwarted when SLU first baseman Braxton Martinez nailed an RBI double in the bottom of the ninth.
Morehead State will continue its 2016 season Tuesday at No. 2 Louisville. First pitch at Jim Patterson Stadium is scheduled for 3 p.m. ET.
