Men's tennis handed first OVC setback to TTU, 6-1

Box Score

COOKEVILLE, Tenn.—Morehead State men's tennis suffered its first OVC setback with a 6-1 loss to Tennessee Tech at Tech Tennis Courts on Friday afternoon.

Morehead State dropped only its second match in the last six contests, moving its record to 5-8 overall and 4-1 in the OVC. TTU extends its current OVC win streak to 12 straight, improving its record to 8-6 overall and 4-0 in the conference.

"I felt like we were very prepared today, but we came out flat in our opening sets," said Head Coach Kevin Fulton. "Tech is tough, and you have to attack them to beat them. I really look forward to facing them again in the OVC tournament."

Sophomore Sebastian Penaloza picked up the lone win for Morehead State. Penaloza went three sets with Carlos Tajes, taking the first set 6-4, followed Tajes matching him in the second set to a 6-4 finish. The final set went to Penaloza, 10-5.

Senior Nick Mercer jumped out to an early lead, defeating Marcos Bennardes in the first set 6-3. He later stumbled in the second set, dropping a 6-4 decision. Bennardes went on to win the third set, 6-4.

Senior Gabriel Ruiz and junior Ritchie Kruunenberg remain undefeated in OVC doubles as their match Alex Arovin and Alberto Esteban went unfinished.

Morehead State continues its stretch of road contests on Saturday as it takes on Jacksonville State at noon ET.
