MOREHEAD, Ky. – Following a second-half comeback effort that ended just short at Eastern Kentucky last Saturday, Morehead State women's basketball (18-7, 8-4 Ohio Valley Conference) looks to bounce back at home on Wednesday, hosting Tennessee State (9-14, 4-9 OVC) at 6 p.m. ET.
Under third-year head coach
Greg Todd, the Eagles have already notched the most wins in one season since Tom Hodges led Morehead State to a 21-10 (13-5 OVC) record in 2010-11.
"It's been a really good process," said Todd. "To have 18 wins, and to be 8-4 in conference play is a very pleasant surprise."
Despite being tabbed as just the preseason No. 10 team in the OVC by a panel of coaches and sports information directors around the league last summer, the Eagles have seen several breakout performances this season – including redshirt-senior
Brianna McQueen's 21.2 points per game over the past five contests.
However, McQueen leads the team with just 14.0 points a game this season. The 5-foot-3 guard is one of four Eagles to average a double-digit scoring output in 2016-17.
"We've had a lot of folks who've had good, solid years," said Todd. "Their work ethic has been great, and they've had something to prove."
Eriel McKee, a third-year junior from Lawrenceburg, Ky., anchors the Eagles' rebounding effort down low. The 5-foot-10 forward has grabbed 185 total boards this year, averaging a team-best 7.7 per outing.
Scoring 11.1 points a game, McKee also has a chance to become the 24th all-time member of the Morehead State 1,000-point club. She currently sits 14 points away, at 986 on her career.
Last weekend's loss marked a season split with the Colonels, a feat the Eagles hope to accomplish with Tennessee State on Wednesday. Morehead State dropped an exceptionally dramatic 69-66 heartbreaker to the Lady Tigers in Nashville, Tenn. last Jan. 11., ending a historic nine-game winning streak for the Eagles.
Saturday's game will be broadcast live on the
OVC Digital Network.
