COOKEVILLE, Tenn. -- The Morehead State baseball team scored four times in its final two at-bats, but it was too little, too late as the Eagles fell 11-8 at Tennessee Tech Saturday.
Morehead State finished the regular-season 34-21 overall and 18-11 in the OVC. The Eagles are the No. 2 seed in next week's league tournament in Oxford, Ala. The Eagles will face the winner of the game between No. 7 Austin
Peay and No. 8 UT Martin on Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET.
"I liked the way we battled and fought until the end," said head coach
Mike McGuire. "We had a rough start on the mound, and that kind of set the tone. But I feel like we have the played the best ball we have all year in the last two weeks, and that is good heading into the tournament.
A trio of homers, including a three-run smash in the first, staked Tech to a 5-1 lead after two frames. But, in the third, junior third baseman Eli
Boggess connected on his seventh round-tripper of the year, and senior
rightfielder Will Schneider had an RBI ground out to make it a 5-3 Golden Eagle lead.
The hosts proceeded to push ahead 9-4 on Nick Osborne's second homer of the day in the fifth.
MSU scored three times in the eighth via RBI singles by senior centerfielder
Ryan Kent and Schneider and a bases-loaded walk drawn by sophomore shortstop
Reid Leonard.
Sophomore
Jake Hammon tallied a run-scoring single in the ninth before Tech closer Ethan Roberts finally sealed his team's win.
Boggess finished with three more hits, upping his nation's-best batting average to .435. Leonard, Schneider and junior first baseman
Tyler Niemann collected two hits.
Dalton Stambaugh absorbed the loss, surrendering five runs in just 1.1 innings.
