MOREHEAD, Ky. -- Morehead State football has added three new coaches to the staff for the 2017 season.
Chris Royal (cornerbacks),
Kalon Humphries (assistant defensive line) and
Tom Coughlin (wide receivers) are the newest members of the staff.
Royal most recently served as guest defensive backs coach for the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League.
He spent the 2016 season at
Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Mo., where he served as Defensive Backs Coach, Recruiting Coordinator, and NFL Liaison.
Royal has held coaching positions at Division I Maryland, Marshall and St. Louis and Division II
Glenville State (W.Va). He has also held positions with the Milwaukee Mustangs of the Arena Football League, and South Lakes (Va.) High School. He played collegiately at Marshall.
Royal was the Passing Game Coordinator, Running Backs, Slot Receivers, Strength and Conditioning and Kickoff Return Coach at
Glenville in 2014 and 2015. His offenses at
Glenville averaged 37.5 points and 471.6 yards per game in his two seasons. He coached two 1,000-yard running backs in the same season,
Rahman Lee and
Tevin Drake. Not only was that good for first and third place in the league but also the first time in school history that had been accomplished.Â
During the 2013 season, Royal served as the Head Strength and Conditioning coach for Saint Louis' 16 Olympic sports. Prior to his time at Saint Louis, he served as a Strength and Conditioning Intern at the University of Maryland.
Royal spent the 2012 season as a Defensive Backs and Coaching Assistant with the Milwaukee Mustangs of the Arena Football League after spending the 2011 and 2012 seasons as the Assistant Receivers Coach at Marshall. While working with the receivers at Marshall, he helped tutor three NFL Players, including New England Patriots' Second Round Draft Pick Aaron Dobson.
Royal was a standout defensive back at Marshall, finishing second in the NCAA in interceptions as a junior. Following his collegiate career, he spent eight seasons in the Arena Football League, where he set the league record for interceptions, as a rookie, in 2007. He was named Rookie of the Year, and a First-Team All-Arena Selection, the year he set the league record for interceptions in 2007. He currently holds two franchise records for interceptions in the Arena Football League.
Royal earned his bachelor's degree from Marshall in 2011. He is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (
CSCS), and Certified Level 1 Sport Performance Coach (USA Weightlifting).
Humphries arrived to Morehead State after serving as the tight ends and assistant offensive line coach at Independence (Kan.) Community College.
He spent the 2015 and 2016 seasons as the varsity offensive line coach for Walled Lake (Mich.) High School.
Humphries began his playing career at Adrian (Mich.) College, where he was a starter on the 2012 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association championship team. He finished his career as a preferred walk-on at the University of Michigan.
Originally from Novi, Mich., Humphries graduated from the University of Michigan with a bachelor's degree in political science in 2016.
Coughlin most recently served as the wide receivers coach at Ithaca (N.Y.) College.
In 2015, he served as the co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks and wide receivers coach at Bridgeton (Maine) Academy.
Coughlin began his playing career at Northern Illinois in 2009. Following a stop at Pasadena (Calif.) City College in 2010, he concluded his career at Division III Wisconsin-Whitewater. Coughlin was a member of Wisconsin-Whitewater's Division III National Championships in 2011 and 2013.
Coughlin earned his bachelor's degree from Wisconsin-Whitewater in 2014.
