MOREHEAD, Ky. -- It's been a while since Morehead State's coaching staff felt this strong about the depth at running back. With more speed and strength than ever, fans are sure to be excited about the men carrying the ball out of the backfield for the 2018 Eagle football team.
"The strength of this group is how they push one another to get better every day," said second year running backs coach
Gene Peterson. "They are very coachable and each one brings a different skill set in our backfield."
The top two on the depth chart heading into 2018 are senior
Arien Beasley and sophomore
Logan Holbrook. Beasley, a Louisville, native who transferred from Eastern Kentucky, scored four times last year and rushed for 203 yards. Holbrook, from Taylorsville, Ky., led the team with 433 yards and five touchdowns. He had 104 yards in his first career game last year.
"The experience that Beasley and Holbrook will bring is enormous," Peterson added. "Having a group of very good backs for depth is something we didn't have last year. Our group this year has speed and power and the ability to score anytime they are on the field."
A trio of newcomers could also very well get their chance to shine. Louisville transfer
Jovan Smith is a redshirt freshman, three-time state champ
Taveon Hunter is from powerhouse Belfry High School, and junior college transfer
Issiah Aguero joins the Eagles after a two-year stint at Palomar (Calif.) College.
Peterson also added that Louisville freshman
Mario Convenuto has had a solid fall camp. He rushed for more than 2,000 yards his final two years at Holy Cross High School.
Morehead State will get the season kick-started with an Aug. 30 game at Eastern Kentucky at 7 p.m. ET. Season tickets for the six home games are on sale now by clicking
